Salut tout le monde! Je suis maintenant rendu en Equateur! Et devinez comment je me suis rendu?!?! En avion... premiere classe!!! WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOO.
Ciao
Hey everyone. This is the first blog coming to you straight from Ecuador. Guess how I got here (I am in the capital... Quito)? By plane... FIRST CLASS... ohhh yeaahhhh!!! Well, actually, there was only one class but I guess that still makes me first class. For a while I was

Equateur!!!
contemplating taking a 30 hour bus from Medellin to Quito but then I found a flight (actually 2 flights) for only $138 and more importantly it only took 1.5 hours. I took the shortest flight of my life from Medellin to Bogota (29 minutes) with Avianca. Then I had a one hour flight, first class of course, from Bogota to Quito with AeroGal. All jokes aside, I was really impressed by the service from AeroGal. They offer you a glass of champagne before take-off on the plane. They serve a full meal (alcohol included) on a one hour flight... I had the typical arroz con pollo y patacones. Then when you are de-boarding they give you a mint to freshen up your breath.
Quito is the first city where I have really felt the effects of altitude. It is the second highest capital city in the world at 2,850 metres above sea level (almost 10,000 feet). I was having head-aches and I had a sore throat but Carlos' dad told me that the sore throat is because the air in this city is so dry. Even people that live here have to drink a lot of water to not
get a sore throat. Anyways, everything is fine now. I have been staying with my friend Carlos' (and of course Natalie's) parents. They have a wonderful house in the suburbs of Quito in a place called Cumbaya and they have been great to me!
Yesterday we went to the Mitad del Mundo, which, literally translated means: Middle of the World. And yes, I hope you guessed it, it is the Equator! It is really cool because there is a line drawn on the ground that represents the Equator. Some people (the french... i think) traced the line hundreds of years ago using the stars! Turns out they were about 150 metres off according to modern GPS coordinates but hey... they used the stars!!! Anyways, being the tourist I am, I took a few pictures with one foot on in the southern hemisphere and one foot in the northern hemisphere. It was actually my first time in the southern hemisphere. Oh yeah, and if you think it's really hot here because it's the equator... you're wrong. During the day it is about 20 (rarely much hotter) and two nights ago when we were out I had a sweater and a
coat and the thermometer read 6 degrees!!!
Last night we went to the colonial city in Quito. It is the biggest colonial city in all of the Americas. It is really beautiful and there are tons of churches and plazas and everything. It is meant to be un-safe but I felt totally at ease with Carlos' parents (and the dog!!) and there was tons of police. Besides, there was a huge gang of obnoxiously loud americans who were much more obvious targets than I was. Plus, all I had on me were 750 colombian pesos.
Today we drove over to Mindo, a little village 2 hours away in the mountains where Carlos' parents have a finca. It was really cool and now I am tired of writing.
Next stop... Guayaquil to see Andres (and Paula) and I am going Wednesday morning by plane because I found a flight for $38.
Seacrest, out.

can't say you never travelled 1st class
That's so cool, one foot in northern hemisphere and one foot in the southern....I didn't realize it was that cold. I guess it is the altitude. Your friend's parents are nice to have picked you up and welcomed you so generously. It's always good to be with people that know the area. Drink lot's of water for your soar throat and especially the headaches. Have fun Corey! Love you..Mom
