When we captured butterflies on surveys, we identified them using the upside and underside. We would safely hold the butterflies like so, so as not to disturb their "scales" on their wings. No butterflies were harmed in our surveys.

Jenn was our bird expert and biologist who was in charge of the bird studies. She knew how to handle birds very well.

Sand flies camped out in my pj´s one night. I awoke with over 40 bites on one side of my leg. Calamine lotion was my saviour! Damn, that was an itchy two days!

On Saturday´s we would travel by ranchero (bus) to this market. It was about 7 booths, and about 2 fixed stores. You could buy clothes, batteries, paper, pens, cookies, chocolate, chips, soaps, empanada´s, chicken dinner, etc...

Stranger fig vines wrap around big trees and slowly steal nutrients until the inside tree dies. You can see that the inside tree is gone. The fig tree eventually becomes one of the biggest in the forest.

Some caterpillars in the rainforest are equiped to taste really bad to the predators by eating yucky tasting leaves. And some have those really "pretty" hairs and spikes that would give the predator (or us, if we touched it) a really nastey rash or burn.

I am speechless! Not to mention extremely jealous of your ongoing adventure. Reesa...your face says it all in the pic entitled "on the canoe." You radiate pure joy and wonder. The pics of insects and animals are excellent and we look forward to every blog entry. Keep safe and I think of you often. Love to you both...Marcy

Hey, Marcy! Thanks for the comments. Yes, it is wonderous what a cold shower does after a day of sweating perfusely! And I´m actually wearing dry, clean clothes in this picture. haha! Miss you!
