Banos is charming! It is nested between a blowing volcano and the Amazon. The mountains are usually covered with clouds and it rains frequently but it is warm. There are dozens of activities to tap into and the place is also known for its volcanic-mineral springs=hot baths. Time is always short, but yesterday we whitewater rafted down the Rio Negro (3+ rating) and today we went canyoning. Both were breathtaking amazing!
Since I wasn't aware canyoning even existed, this is what we did... We hiked up an Andes mountain and then went down a canyon, over waterfalls et al. We wore wetsuits, jackets, helmets and belayed down ropes one waterfall after another (5 total). We had 3 guides and there are 4 of us who are hanging together doing these mindblasting activities. We have 3 cameras going, 1 only yesterday so have yet to share them. We plan on doing so tomorrow so these are only mine.
The prices here bring you back in time when there was actual value in the dollar. Our breakfast: 2 coffees, 1 lg. fresh fruit juice (today-mora), 1 lg. veg.omelet, 1 lg. fruit salad, both of which we split=less than $5. Today's lunch for $5 which fed the 4 of us:
4 beers (here they are .5 liter), 1 mocha coffee (guess whose that was), 2 lg. bowls soup, 2 cheese & tomato sandwiches, 1 ham & cheese sandwich. Amazing, huh!
Many foreigners are here going to Language School which is very reasonable, $6/hr, 1-1 lessons, 4 hrs/day. I definitely want to return to do this. It is beautiful here, very lush; the town is clean, the people friendly.
Until next time!
