My dear friends, I want to tell you now about the place where I have lived for some time, for almost 7 years to be more precise, while accompanying my parents in Colombia. This is Floridablanca, in Santander; my parents bought a house there while I was abroad and as I wanted to stay with them during my sabbatical, then I was quite happy to be lodging at the mama hotel, specially after my sabbatical turned into a 6-year teaching period, already and now, when some events have brought many changes into our family life. Anyway, the house was first rented by Jose, my brother and his family, which made it easy for my parents to decide to move to this city.

Recientemente inaugurado, esta estatua de 40 metros de altura que brinda una vista magnífica de la ciudad. que sea conocedor, pueden venir, saborear la gran cantidad de postres y mermeladas que se hacen de cidra, leche y apio. Me gustan las deliciosas obleas, que son como galletas dulces, a las que se les echa arequipe, son muy gustosas, especialmente a mi me recuerdan las que se hacían en mi pueblo, bueno casi iguales...pero mejores.
The area, inhabited by 265,000 people, has lately become quite important for the economy of the city as it houses the most remarkable medical centres of the city, as well as some key schools, like the bilingual New Cambridge School, which is the 7th best institution in the whole country. In Cañaveral, there are great expensive residential areas and modern shopping centres. Well, now, investors seem to be looking for every tiny hole to build apartments, and by what I see advertised, they are catering to a big amount of potential foreign tourists. Therefore, many people from this region are buying property mainly on credit. I wonder what will happen when the boom comes to a halt.
El área extensa y que acoge a 265.000 habitantes, se está volviendo muy importante para la economía de Bucaramanga, ya
que allí se encuentran los centros médicos más importantes de la ciudad, así como algunos colegios importantes, como el bilingüe New Cambridge School, que el año pasado ocupó el 7mo lugar en todo el país. Aquí encontrarás áreas residenciales, que son bastante caras y centros comerciales modernos. Bien, ahora, los inversionistas están tratando de encontrar cada huequito que quede por ahí, para construir apartamentos. Parece como si estuvieran preparando el terreno para la gran cantidad de turistas extranjeros potenciales, así que mucha gente están comprando apartamentos, con créditos bancarios, no me alcanzo a imaginar lo que va a pasar cuando esta prosperidad de finca raíz termine y la gente tenga que pagar sus créditos.

La experiencia bilíngue en el New Cambridge fue excelente, allí enseñé Inglés al grado 10 (preparación para los GCSE) y a 11 (Preparación para el examen internacional IELTS); también fui el director del grado noveno, una nueva materia en Cambridge llamada Perspectivas Globales, una materia muy interesante que prepara a los estudiantes para la vida, pues les permite tener una percepción en la historia y los problemas actuales del mundo. Me encantó, también fui el director del grado 9B (unos estudiantes geniales) y aunque, ahora solo voy allí, como examinador o vigilante de exámenes, es siempre un gustazo ya que los estudiantes son sorprendentes, ah y los colegas, ni hablar.
A bit of Floridablanca´s history
According to the vestiges found on the area, Floridablanca was first inhabited by the Guaneses, a group of indigenous people, who together with the Muiscas, were a prehispanic community that stood out thanks to their cultural heritage. They were renown for their strength, which, as legend has it, they would get mainly from their staple food: Corn. They would also eat the famous bumpy ants, which
I suppose, at that time, they were not the sort of delicacy that they are now. They probably run out of their secret food weapon as they were then defeated in 1540 by another Spanish conqueror, this time, Martin Galeano.
De acuerdo a los vestigios encontrados en el área, Floridablanca fué primero habitada por los Guanes, un grupo indígena, quienes junto con los Muiscas, eran una comunidad prehispánica que sobresalió, gracias a su legado cultural. Se les conocía por su fuerza, la cual se le atribuye a su alimento principal: el maíz. También comían las tan famosas Hormigas Culonas, que supongo, no eran en ese tiempo una exquisitez, como la mayoría de la gente las considera ahora. Luego parece que se les acabó el alimento secreto pues los Guanes fueron entonces derrotados en 1540, por otro conquistador español, esta vez, Martín Galeano.
The speedy growth
Floridablanca is expanding itself at an unbelievable speed, it seems that functional and comfortable blocks of flats have been built in the last 5 years, catering to people with good taste and plenty of money, as the prices are skyrocketing. Many of those flats have got
jacuzzies, turcos, swimming pools, ample green areas, sports centres and very few, state of the art technology, which is particularly beneficial to the foreign visitors, that are supposed to come in large numbers.
Floridablanca está creciendo a una velocidad increíble, se han ido construyendo apartamentos funcionales y muy cómodos en los últimos 5 años, estos se han construído pensando en clientes con buen gusto y mucho dinero, ya que los precios se subieron por las nubes. Muchos tienen jacuzzies, turcos, piscinas, amplias zonas verdes, centros deportivos y algunos, la última tecnología, lo que es particularmente beneficioso para los turistas extranjeros, que se supone, vendrán a la ciudad en grandes cantidades.
Exporting health services: The full package
Being a part of the Health Tourism Project, proposed by the government, Floridablanca´s meant to be the source of wealth for the Santander´s region. This will be one of the first projects, in which, the government will promote the strengthening of health programmes in Colombia, at the same time that it promotes visits to the Chicamocha Canyon and other tourist spots, like Mesa de los Santos, which you can also find here in an entry. This
interest was determined by the increasing number of foreign tourists looking for quality health services at lower prices. Which it is easy to understand, just to give you an example: while in the States, an intervention might cost like 9 million pesos, here they will have it for 2.
Como parte del Proyecto de Turismo de Salud, propuesto por el gobierno, se espera que Floridablanca sea la fuente de ingresos en Santander. Este será uno de los primeros proyectos, en el cual, el gobierno promocionará el fortalecimiento de programas de salud en Colombia, al mismo tiempo que se ve cada vez más publicidad para visitas al Cañón del Chicamocha y otros lugares turísticos, como la Mesa de los Santos, que ustedes pueden igualmente encontrar aquí. Este interés se determinó por el número creciente de turistas extranjeros buscando servicios de salud de calidad a precios bajos. Lo que es entendible, mientras en Estados Unidos, una intervención podría costar 9 millones de pesos, aquí, ellos la podrán tener por 2. ¿Quien dijo yo?
It is expected that the services offered like Ophthalmology, Cancer and Cardiovascular treatments, Aesthetic Surgery, among others, will be provided respecting international standards.
This will most likely lead to an increase in the number of tourists coming to Floridablanca. For now, there are mainly tourists enjoying the full package (health and tourism) from Sam Martin Island and other caribbean islands, but it is expected that people, from other countries, will descend on Colombia, searching for good prices and quality health treatments.
Se espera que los servicios ofrecidos como tratamientos de Oftalmología, Cáncer y Cardiovasculares, Cirugía Estética sean proporcionados respetando estándares internacionales. Esto seguramente va a llevar a un aumento en el número de turistas visitando a Floridablanca. Por ahora, los turistas que están disfrutando del paquete completo de Salud y Turismo vienen de la isla San Martin y de las islas del Caribe, pero se espera que gente de otros países empiecen a llegar en los años venideros buscando buenos precios y tratamientos de calidad.
Personally, I have had the pleasure to experience the great standards of Dr Virgilio Galvis´s work, at his own ophthalmologic centre, located at Foscal Clinic. He´s worked there for over 30 years. Both my father and I (well, I just went for some routine eye exams and an eyeglasses prescription) were quite
pleased with the treatment; My father, who had catharat, underwent surgical operation in both eyes and both the pre-operative and post-operative treatments were performed by highly trained eye care professionals, who carefully monitored my dad´s condition. In fact, he´s still going for some post-operation checkups and I continue applying his eyedrops to ease pain and protect his eyes..
Personalmente, he tenido el placer de experimentar los grandes estándares del doctor Virgilio Galvis, en su centro oftalmológico, ubicado en la Clínica Foscal por más de 30 años. Mi padre y yo, bueno, yo fuí solo por chequeos rutinario y una prescripción de lentes, estuvimos contentos con el tratamiento; mi padre, que tenía cataratas, se hizo operar los dos ojos y ambos, tanto el pre como el post operativo se realizaron con profesionales altamente calificados quienes cuidadosamente monitorearon el estado de mi padre. En realidad, todavía va a algunos controles post-operatorios, y se sigue aplicando las gotas formuladas para alivio de dolor y acople.
Planning and sorting out chaotic transport I believe that there has been lots of thinking about how to increase the number of tourists and wealth in the
city, which goes very well with the fact that Colombia will welcome thousands of foreigners in the next few years. Although there are some current transport problems, authorities have started thinking about how to solve them, the building of a huge bridge is on the pipeline to sort out the worrying lack of motorways that would support the arrival of so many people. I mean, I am not saying that the tourists expected are already here, but if you sort of forecast what will happen afterwards, we will be better equipped to have them enjoy every bit of their stay here. This bridge will stop the traffic jams, on the South-North motorway, that might turn a conscientious driver into an aggressive one, at any hour of the day. Let´s hope that they do something similar on 33 street in Bucaramanga, may be a new lane? Well, I don´t know about engineering but it occurs to me that it will help.
Planeando y solucionando el transporte caótico
Creo que se ha pensado mucho en como aumentar el número de turistas y riqueza para la ciudad, lo que va bien con el hecho de que Colombia va a recibir miles de extranjeros en los
próximos años. Aunque hay, por ahora, algunos problemas de transporte, las autoridades han pensado en solucionarlos, parece ser que van a construir un gran puente planeado para combatir la falta de vías. Esperamos que suceda pronto pues hay que acoger este gran proyecto de envergadura y se pueda acoger a tantos turistas. No estoy diciendo que ya hayan llegado, pero si se prevée, con tiempo, estaremos mejor equipados para que ellos disfruten cada momento de estadía aquí. Así que ya habrá solución para los trancones en la autopista Sur-Norte, que podrían volver loco a cualquier conductor, sin importar la hora del día. Esperemos que luego, también hagan algo con la 33 en Bucaramanga, quizás un nuevo carril? Yo no sé nada de eso, pero se me ocurre.
In addition, it is a shame that the municipality seems to be only worried about the flux of those foreign tourists but not much has been done to embellish some of the areas. Sadly, in some important spots, after they sort of clean, you can see bumps of trash on the main roads; it might seem that Floridablanca is not to be included on the list of beautiful Santander cities,
as the impression people might get when visiting, is that of a forgotten Macondo, to be honest.
Me parece tristón que el municipio parece estar solamente preocupado por el flujo de turistas extranjeros pero que no hayan hecho mucho para embellecer algunas de las áreas de la ciudad. Tristemente, en algunas partes, luego de que hacen limpieza, se pueden ver montones de basura en carreteras principales. Podría ser que Floridablanca no esté para figurar en la lista de las ciudades bonitas de Santander, ya que la impresión que se puede llevar la gente que la visita podría ser, la de un Macondo olvidado.
What about the tramway? ¿Y qué hay del Metrolinea?
People´s takes on the matter are divided into those who think that the Metrolinea (a tramway) has actually helped improve the traffic in the city. But when it comes to Floridablanca and its main motorway, we have to admit that it actually worsened the situation as now drivers have fewer lanes. As a result, it occurs to me that, riding a motorcycle is the best alternative you have to fight those traffic jams on the motorway, seriously! Although the building of the
Caracoli shopping centre has helped somehow to sort the problem out, as they built a new lane joining the main highway, the lack of control continues as buses and taxis would stop to collect passengers on the motorway, making the congestion even worse. I have seen some traffic wardens, or policemen for this matter, standing there and catching people doing it, but once they leave, the hullaballoo starts over.
Las opiniones de la gente están divididas entre aquellos que piensan que el Metrolinea ayudó realmente a mejorar el tráfico en la ciudad. Pero cuando se trata de Floridablanca, tenemos que admitir que lo que hizo fue empeorar la situación, porque ahora los conductores tienen un carril menos por donde circular. En consecuencia, se me ocurre que, la mejor alternativa para luchar contra esos trancones es comprarse una moto, de verdad! Aunque la construcción del centro comercial ha ayudado, de alguna manera, a solucionar el problema, ya que construyeron un nuevo carril que abre un poco el tráfico, la falta de control continua y usted puede ver a conductores de buses y de taxis parando para coger pasajeros, lo que hace la congestión aún peor. He visto que
a veces se paran unos agentes del tráfico, o policías en verdad, tratando de parar el problema, pero una vez que se van, el caos continúa.
Me, as a contributor to the Health Tourism Project.
I was part of the bilingual project as I coordinated, during 3 years, the programme for Nursing at the Autonomous University, which aimed to provide the leaving nurses with bilingual education. In this regard, I designed the syllabus, created and chose the teaching material and taught the upper levels. The idea was to use real communication situations, you know the sort of nurse-patient dialogues that will help them to fight that omnipresent fear of speaking English to foreigners. We worked a lot on technical vocabulary (Fundamental procedures: Pediatrics, Oncology, etc), set phrases and plenty of American videos. I also helped out with the calls placed and written messages sent by the university to Montpellier and Paris institutions, as they were looking for students´exchanges. Without wishing to sound too conceited, the work was done up to the standards required for them.
Fuí parte de este proyecto ya que coordiné durante 3 años, en la Autónoma, el programa bilingüe de
Enfermería, el cual tenía como objetivo suministrarle a las enfermeras salientes la educación bilingüe. Con relación a este, diseñé el currículo, creé y escogí el material y enseñé a los niveles superiores. La idea era usar situaciones reales de comunicación, por ej. el tipo de diálogos frecuentes entre una enfermera y un paciente, que las ayudarían a luchar ese temor omnipresente de hablarle en inglés a los extranjeros. Trabajamos con harto vocabulario técnico (Procedimientos fundamentales: Pediatría, Oncología, etc), frases tipo y actividades de escucha. También ayudé con las llamadas y los mensajes escritos enviados por la universidad a instituciones de Montpellier y Paris que estaban buscando acuerdos para los estudiantes. Sin querer sonar demasiado presuntuoso, el trabajo que se hizo, fue de la calidad requerida para los objetivos planteados.
It was also an interesting experience to serve as an interpreter for my lovely friend Sandra Cadena, a PhD scholar in Nursing and Research matters. She was working for the South Florida University and has a great amount of experience in exchanging programmes, as she has helped plenty of American students, to conduct research studies in Panama and viceversa, it was such a pleasure to interpret for the
students and my Faculty colleagues and help her in interaction meetings, programmed by the Nursing Faculty. On days like these, I considered the idea of changing jobs, as it is, although tiring, a very interesting experience.
También fue una agradable experiencia servir como intérprete para quien, luego se convirtió en mi gran amiga, la doctora Sandra Cadena, una doctora experta en Enfermería e Investigación. Ella trabajaba para la universidad del Sur de la Florida y cuenta con una vasta experiencia en programas de intercambio, ya que ha ayudado a estudiantes Americanos a realizar estudios en Panamá y viceversa. Fue un gran placer interpretar para los estudiantes y mis colegas de Facultad y ayudarla en reuniones de interacción, programadas por la Facultad de Enfermería. En días como estos, llegué a pensar en cambios de profesión porque es muy interesante, pero fatigante.
Places of Interest
Well, if you come by, you might be able to visit some of the interesting places here, notably the Botanical Garden and the Guane Museum. But if what you want is shopping, you find a great variety of goods in the Caracoli shopping centre, specially Chilean chains.
No hay muchos lugares turísticos para visitar, pero al menos, se puede ir al Jardín botánico y al Museo Guane. Pero si lo que te gusta es ir de compras, el centro comercial Caracolí, es lo que necesitas con su grande surtido de productos, especialmente de marcas Chilenas.
Eloy Valenzuela Botanical Garden Given that the garden houses lots of East constructions, it is known as the "Umbrella's Place". This garden is a member of the International Botanical Garden Conservation, and as such, it manages to teach you how ecofriendly your attitudes must be if you want to stop hurting our planet. With almost 8 hectares, the garden offers a great deal of medicine, ornamental plants, beautiful orchids and some animals that add fun to your visit.
We have to remember that Eloy Valenzuela, this remarkable personality of Giron wrote the first journal of Mutis´s Botanical Expedition, departing from Bogota in 1783. He was also appointed deputy director of that Expedition to the period 1783-1784, which was in Mariquita, that had become the main laboratory of the expedition.

Con casi 8 hectáreas, el jardín ofrece gran cantidad de plantas medicinales, ornamentales y unas orquídeas muy bonitas y algunos animales que le añaden un poco de diversión a las visitas.
Tenemos que recordar que Eloy Valenzuela, esta personalidad importante de Girón escribió el primer periódico de la Expedición Botánica de Mutis que partió de Bogotá en 1783- Fue igualmente nombrado subdirector de esa expedición para el periodo de 1783-1784, la cual se realizó en Mariquita, que se había convertido en el laboratorio principal de la expedición.
The Guane Museum Located in the Casa de la Cultura Piedra del Sol, the museum houses some archeological pieces made of gold, textiles, some skulls that remind you of the indigenous heritage. The worshippers of the sun and skilled artisans inhabited this area and part of the Boyaca department.

If you are interested in paragliding, then at only 15 minutes, you have Ruitoque, from where you can see lots of brave people having fun while doing paragliding. It might be a lovely experience so that you get rid of your vertigo fears and enjoy nature.
Si usted está interesaron en Parapente, entonces a solo 15 minutos, tienen a Ruitoque, desde donde pueden ver a mucha gente valerosa disfrutando el parapente. Podría ser una experiencia hermosa para que se olvide de sus temores de vértigo y disfrute la naturaleza.
On another note... Well, if I can alter my father´s brain, I mean if I could sort of switch that particular motor neuron of his that does the choosing, I would change it so that he had bought a house in San Alonso, where my uncle Alfonso lives; that area is so beautiful and tranquile and it has always been my mum´s
dream; I guess, we will be living in a more pretty area with less noisy neighbours. But as I said it before, given that the laws of physics outdo my power of changing my father´s neurones, then I must say that I actually like living in Floridablanca.
Otro punto Bien, si pudiera alterar el cerebro de mi padre, quiero decir, si pudiera mover su neurona motora que es la que se encarga de escoger, cambiaría el lugar para comprar una casa en San Alonso, donde vive uno de mis tíos, Alfonso; San Alonso es muy bonito y tranquilo y siempre ha estadon en los sueños de mi querida mami. Me imagino que, estaríamos viviendo, entonces en un barrio más bonito y con vecinos menos ruidosos. Pero como lo dije antes, dado que las leyes de Física me imposibilitan cambiar las neuronas de mi padre, pues entonces debo decir que si, que me gusta vivir en Floridablanca.

Well, just to finish this entry, Today, I was filling up a questionnaire for my students, in which they ask you questions to find out how much
of Shakespeare´s personality you´ve got, well. I can tell you the differences between us. For once, I know my date of christening, second, if you google me, you might find some information, for example, about the books I own in Goodreads and last, I do keep an online manuscript of my writings, here in travelblog. Hehehe, anyway, you see, not very much like him but I love his writings. Hey, by the way, is Shakespeare a he or a she, they never found out, even if he did exist.
Sorry, that was my schizophrenic moment, now back to reality. I get down to my novel writing, hugs to all of you..
Hoy , me encontraba llenando un cuestionario, para una de mis clases, en el que se nos hacen preguntas para averiguar qué tanto nos parecemos a Shakespeare y decidí hacerlo yo, antes de hacérselo mis alumnos. Y ya obtuve resultados. Bueno, a diferencia de él, yo so conozco mi fecha de nacimiento, además, si me fueran a buscar en google, encontrarían información sobre los libros que he leído en Goodreads y, además, también guardo un manuscrito en línea de mis escritos, aquí en Travelblog, para
ser más preciso, jajaja, bueno, de todas maneras, no me parezco mucho a Shakespeare, pero adoro sus libros. Ahora, era Shakespeare, un hombre o una mujer? nunca se reveló tal misterio.
Disculpen esto fué mi momento esquizofrénico, ahora volvamos a la realidad, sigo escribiendo mi novela, un abrazo a todos..
