Flew into Santiago from Easter Island and decided to give it a chance after my original plan to head straight out again .... I am glad I did. First night I had dinner with Mark and Jessica whom I met on the island. We were determined to prove to each other that we were capable of staying awake beyond 10 pm. I don't know what it is about island life but each day it was a struggle to stay up late. Luckily we went to Bellavista which is a lovely part of Santiago with bars and restaurants the moment you step out of the hostel. Dinner and then a local bar where I discovered Pisco Manzilla. Have no idea why I thought that might be less potent than pisco sour. All to say the next morning ... read more

Fin by, men altsaa ganske kjedelig.... read more

Heading Home After nearly a month away from home alone, I was finally on my way back. Getting from Quito to Canberra was not going to be easy. It couldn't be done in one hit unless one went up to Miami, across to LA and then to Sydney, and even then there were some quite long breaks. Another route seemed to end up in the US mid-West for half a day in some city whose name I barely recognised - not enough time to go anywhere, but too long just to hang around the airport without getting horribly bored. So I had stayed a couple of extra days in Quito, and was now on my way to Santiago for a couple of days before catching a LAN Chile/QANTAS code share flight back through Auckland. The plan ... read more

¡Vamos...vamos Chileanos...esta noche tenemos que ganar! So saturday night we went to Santiago to see the Chilean nacional soccer team play against Uruguay--competing for spaces for the World Cup in Germany 2006. I bought a Chilean track jacket for the game and I was ready to get mean! We got to Santiago and of course headed to get some piscola before the game - they dont sell alcohol anywhere that is within 10 blocks around the stadium ( can you imagine a south american team and a game where all the fans were drunk!) So we drank...and quickly before heading to the Stadium. The game started at 10pm but we had to get there at 6 to have seats. I was wondering what we were supposed to do for 4 hrs but believe me there was ... read more

Hi everyone - hope you all had a nice Easter weekend. Our mood has lightened considerably since you last heard from us, not least because we've finally got into Chile at about the 3rd time of asking. As expected, San Martin de los Andes was quiet, really quiet. We spent the best part of two days doing absolutely nothing until our bus to Mendoza on Friday morning. The two day stay was memorable only for the hostel, which was like either a cub camp or a prison, we couldn't make our minds up! We left San Martin on Friday at 11am, had to change buses at a place called Neuquen on Friday evening, and arrived in Mendoza at about 7am on Saturday. Our run of bad luck continued, as we found that there was nowhere to ... read more

...still in Santiago and having a good time. Met up with some friends of friends and discovered a little bit of the night life and learned more about their culture. Apparently the one Irish pub in town has a 3 day St. Patty´s day celebration, so we caught the last day of it. Still trying to get used to the change in times people go out. I was invited to dinner at 10pm and then we didn´t go out until midnight...my kind of hours, but still have to adjust. I met up with another friend of a friend and she´s been so nice showing me around. Her boyfriend works for the Airlines here so I´m tyring to work a free ticket to the south of Chile instead of taking the 11 hour bus ride this weekend. ... read more

I´ve had excellent weather the entire time I´ve been in South America (knock on wood). Santiago continues to amaze, a great city that I never really knew much about, actually a great country to retire in. There are mountains an hour north (Andes are the 2nd largest mtn range in the world). Then there are wine regions, and a beach only an hour away as well. Safety is very important here and there is no corruption like many other parts of S. America. A very conservative and laid back society from what I have seen so far. I´ll go out this weekend and see what the nightlife is like. I had dinner last night at the house of a family of a friend from Hawaii. They were so welcoming and hospitable. I leaned a little about ... read more

I´ve been in Chile for a few days now and it´s such a clean, safe, nice city. Similar to a new US city in some ways, but has a great South American feel to it with lots of color and history. The people have been very helpful and welcoming. Seems like a simple culture and very business oriented at the same time. Looking into apartments and jobs at the moment. The prices here are a bit more than I expected, almost similar to US prices. Argentina was by far much cheaper, but not nearly as safe and clean, so I guess you get what you pay for. More to follow...and pictures ... read more

I´ve had the best experience of the trip so far and its only day 3. After an initial day spent taking in the sights in Santiago, we wanted to get out of the city and away from the thick smog that covers much of it. So, we decided to take a day trip to the Maipo Valley and the Andes mountains near the Chile-Argentina border. We trekked to about 3400 metres and took in a spectacular glacier and gazed down at a massive valley, surrounded by imposing snow-capped mountain peaks on all sides. Lunch was had on a ledge overlooking the valley. With a cup of Chilean red wine in one hand and a tuna sandwich in the other, it was almost surreal being in the rocky expanse with not another soul in sight for miles. ... read more
