Getting ready for La Roja!
I arrived in Santigo at 5am on a flight from Bogota with Andy. After clearing customs, we hopped a cab to the HI santiago hostel on cienfuegos 151. We couldn't check in so we slept on the couches in the common area for a few hours. It was good, but freezing!! After we put our bags in our room we went exploring in Santiago. As we were walking to change money and get breakfas, we noticed a crowd gathering in the plaza constitution, so we decided to stay and see what was happening. We soon found out La Roja (Chilean soccer team) was returning from South Africa!! We decided to stay. The crowd continued to grow and La Roja walked down the pathway leading up to the gov't building. The crowd went wild.....Chile chants, confetti, horns, newscameras, and screaming fans were among us! A few minutes later they came out on the balaconies of the building and greeted the crowd. It was fun, but by this point we were hungry and ready to go - so we found a cafe and had lunch. After we wandered the streets and did the Santiago walking tour, and climed Santa Lucia, a park in

La Roja!!
Santiago that gives you a 360 view of the city. It was incredible seeing the city beneath the snow covered Andes mountains. Next, we bought a prepaid cell phone (the guy who helped us was super patient and nice, but they have an extremely confusing cell phone system). No one speaks English, so I got to practice my broken spanish quite a bit. After that escapde we decided to go to Bellavista - the area of town that is supposed to have great bars and restaurants. We shared a bottle of Carmenere and had some empandas. After, we grabbed a cab back to our hostel, had a simple dinner, and went to our room and fell asleep within 5 minutes!
After a good 12 hours sleep, we woke up, had some breakfast and did a bit more touring around the city. We went out to eat to Las Vacas Gordas, caught the end of the football game ..... paraguay vs. spain ..... and had an amazing steak dinner and a bottle of red. It was by far the best meal I have had in the country!!!
