Well, Dave is having to write this entry because Kevyn blew away in Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in Chile. As the hurricane force winds blew her off the trail, she was heard screaming¨"But I paid alot of money to suffer like this...". Okay, I´m kidding of course, but it isn´t that far from the truth, it was really windy! We left Punta Arenas on the first bus we could on Monday. We headed to Puerto Natales, the gateway to Torres del Paine, and only a three hour bus ride this time. We found a nice little hostel (Casa de Teresa) with super friendly staff. We made our preparations for getting to the park and then for connecting to another bus after our hike, so that we wouldn´t have to backtrack 2.5 hours to Puerto ... read more

Happy Australia Day. TORRES DEL PAINE - back in Chilean Patagonia with the obligatory rise in prices back across the border. Forget the cost Yeatesy and enjoy the ride, the long ride just to get into the National Park, including a particularly scenic ferry jaunt across a lake with a colour I can´t describe - better to leave that to the guys who label those paint colour charts - something like cream of cobalt or Patagonian perfume. Checked into our $35US each bed in a 6 bed dorm (YEATESY, FOEGET THE COST!!!) and set off. I think we bit off more than we could chew on the first day - 23 klms. I kept telling myself it´s only 2 Sutherland to Surf runs plus interest. A bit more demanding carrying about 8 kg over, through, under ... read more

Ok im back of my treck in the torres del paine national park and am feeling like i need foot replacement surgery! this is the story... Myself, hannah, mayo, gil and wes set off on out 3 day treck to see the glaciers and lakes of the park on a nice sunny day. The first day we set up camp and hiked 9 hours up and down to see the towers (hugh granite mountain pillars) which was amazing dispite the rock climb/scramble up the mountains. We were really lucky as we got to see the famous 3 towers (mum i have sent you a post card of these) as the clouds cleared (some people ... read more

Sooooooooo, Left Puerto Natales in Chile to go into Torres Del Paine National Park. Was looking forward to 5 days hiking in fantastic scenery. The weather was perfect when we got there, cloudless sky and high temperatures. Just what you need when you are going to be walking up hill for most of the day carrying our big rucksacks. Still, better than wind, rain and snow which is a possibility at any time of year up there. We made it up to the amazing towers (Torres), although the pictures really dont do the size of them any justice. Heather spotted some climbers half way up the tallest one - apparently its a 3 day climb to the top and back. Apparently Chris Bonnington has climbed it in the past too. We stayed in a small hostel ... read more

Hey guys, first up hope you all had a great christmas and new year. We have moved on a lot from Peru passing through Arequipa to see the mummy Juanita and then on to the north of Chile for christmas and the new year on the beach. we are now in Patagonia and have just completed the big circuit of the Torres del Pain... sorry i meant Paine. Before the walk I managed to earn myself 30 minutes of silent treatment from Stacey by saying ´its just a walk in the park´, but i managed to then undo this by mentioning that our food alowences included a large chocolate bar per day! the scenery is really breathtaking and the full circuit feels so remote as nearly all of the people visiting the park choose the smaller ... read more

The destination is just the beacon, arrival not the point completion is relative, elusive even the journey is the essence. experience is the key to knowledge learning by evolution So i made my way through the cold and a few nondescript towns to Torres del Paine. a national park in Chile, that has been declared by UNESCO as a world heritage site. for its beauty. and it is beautiful. extremely so. Lakes, mountains, rivers, forests, waterfalls, glaciers, they are all in this place. and the serenity, and utter peace. Ok there were too many people for my liking, i ould have prefered it better if i met no one for the entire 6 days i was there...but what to do...everyone wants to see this place. So this is the scene for hike number two...i think i ... read more

Halli Hallo!

Travelling down to the southern most tip of South America we have embarked upon an epic journey through Patagonia. We have travelled through the most spectacular scenery by aeroplane, bus and mostly foot. We have experienced extremes of hot and cold and moved from crystalline mountain lakes to thunderous collapsing glaciers. The trip has even managed to reconnect me with my secondary school education. Last but not least we have crossed into Argentina, the final country of our south American voyage, where we are getting to grips with a new variation of Spanish and an even greater aversion to vegetarian food than previously encountered. Unable to take the Navimag ferry down to Patagonia we instead opted for yet another internal flight down to Punta Arenas. This cold, windy but attractive city sits on the Magellan straights, ... read more

“So are they fiberglass or aluminum?” the American hostel owner with legs like tree trunks asked me. “Oh, they are fiberglass,” I replied proudly, knowing also that the flysheet was polyester, the weight was 3kg, the front door was fitted with no-see-um fine mesh and the window was PVC. With little experience of camping, I had decided that before stepping out into the wilds of Patagonia I should at least do some tent research and after much trawling through Santiago shopping malls, I felt confident I had brought the perfect tent. The American man continued, “you have fiberglass poles? Oh, they’re just going to shatter”. Possibly not noticing my crushed expression he ploughed on “yeah, with the kind of winds here, you should only be taking aluminum. Fiberglass poles will snap like twigs.” He added an ... read more
