So we left Salvador to go to Olinda via bus (just the 15 hours). We had to negotiate the local bus to get to the station which turned out to be an interesting affair. Once it arrived Daniel got on followed by this man with two enormous bin bags full of empty drinks cans, who snuck infront of me. Before I could get on, the bus driver decided to leave, at which point I began to panic until I saw a very comical scene unfolding before me. Daniel had decided, moving or not, he was getting off that bus and he was taking the can tramp with him. I could see him barging this man back down the stairs, using his backpack as a weapon now and practically assaulting him, until the pair of them came tumbling out. After negotiations we were allowed on to the bus again, can man unfortunately was not.
Olinda was a similar town to Salvador but a lot quieter. We had another interesting journey on one of the local buses when we missed our stop and didn´t realise until we were a few miles down the road. We then had to sit on the bus,
Viagra Drinks
Quite a substantial part of the tour was the guide talking about these on our own, in some very run down area while the bus driver had a coffee before taking us back. We felt a bit vulnerable whilst sat waiting, with Daniels locks acting as a beacon for petty thieves. At one point we actually considered whether he should lay on the bus floor out of sight until the driver returned. All in all a 20 minute journey took 2 and a half hours. Just what we wanted after 15hours on a coach. We did a tour while we were there but there wasn´t really much going on so we decided to head back to Rio and go to Ilha Grande.
Ilha Grande (big island!) is as the name suggests and has some really nice beaches. We decided on the first day to try and find a more remote one and instead of taking the boat like most others, we decided to walk it. It was through the jungle area, it was pretty hot, it took over two hours and we forgot to buy water. Worth it when we got there though and we saw a bit of wildlife on the way! It also provided us with one of our best
Where´s Wally?
The puppets they use during carnival meals, Im ashamed to say it was cheeseburger and chips. We haven´t found Brazilian food to be the best (sorry Natalia!), Daniel looks close to tears everytime he gets his dinner although it also doesn´t help that we aren´t sure what we´re ordering. Anyway, we spent a couple of days there just at the beaches mainly and then embarked on a 24hour coach journey to the iguassu falls.
The iguassu falls were really amazing, they are 3 times wider than Niagra and we got pretty soaked. There had been a lot of rain before we got there and so they were really impressive. We walked around there for a couple of hours and the final part takes you out right in front of one of the falls, the spray coming off it was unbelievable and you could hardly see, as you can probably see in most of the pictures.
We left there last night and are now on our final trip before we leave Brazil. We are in a place called the Pantanal and tomorrow we do a 3 day trek into the worlds largest wetland. There is loads of wildlife and we go looking for caimans, anacondas,
jaguars and do some piranha fishing. We were quite looking forward to that part until we met a guy yesterday who hadn´t handled them with much care and it took the tip of his finger off!
Will let you know how we get on
