Travel Day
Lunch guest - he was a bit hard to miss in these colours Friday 3
rdJanuary (Odyssey Day 56)
So today we left our New Year camp, departing at 0730 after breakfast. Everyone was sad to leave as we have all really enjoyed our New Year break. Packing up our tent, I was rather unlucky to discover the hard way that fire ants had decided that under the tent was a nice cool place to build a new home. By the time the first one bit, my feet were covered with them and it was certainly one way to make sure I was well and truly awake! And I am not at all ashamed to admit that this had me jumping around, spinning in circles and shaking my feet in some weird parody of the chicken dance trying to get them off as fast as possible. To be fair there was also a nest near the back of the truck where the bag locker is, so I wasn’t the only one dancing this morning. Actually, I do now wonder though, why do we shake our arms so much when trying to get something off our feet?
Out on the road again, today
was so very hot - not to mention the humidity! Must be close to 100% today. All the windows of the truck stay wide open, as it takes only a few seconds for it to be unbearable inside otherwise.
The toilet stops can be interesting around here. Our first pit stop took rather a long time as only one toilet had a door on and with so many people on the truck, it takes a while to get through. We joke that proper bathroom facilities take way longer than the side-of-the-road, find-a-bush stops we had to make through Argentina.
The camp tonight is a real bush camp. We pulled off the road next to a tree farm with a herd of cattle on the other side of the fence. Out of view of the road but still within hearing of the trucks rumbling past.
The evening brought with it a beautiful light show in the distance as we watched a storm slowly make its way closer. Fortunately we were well in bed before any rain reached us. The thunder

Piranha River Dam and lightning were spectacular, but that doesn’t mean any of us would appreciate getting wet.
Of course, being a bush camp there was no chance to have a shower and so no chance to cool off at all. The approaching storm also meant we couldn’t leave our tent flaps up to cool the interior of the tents either. At this camp though, we did finally have a group discussion about seating arrangements on the truck. Its a bit overdue really, but hopefully the unanimously agreed to rotation will stop the complaints about people hogging the best seats.
Saturday 4
th January (Odyssey Day 57)
We left early this morning, making another long travel day. Everyone is looking forward to a shower tonight. When the weather was cooler it wasn’t as big a deal, but now with the humidity and heat we all want showers to cool down and wash up.
We crossed the Piranha River in the morning and there was quite a large dam built there. It’s a major river
and the dam was quite impressive, even though we only got a brief glimpse as we drove over it.
We got in to the Pe da Serra camp around 1800 but clocks go forward an hour, so suddenly it is later. Everyone put up their tents before it got too dark and then headed for the showers. There was only one shower each for the guys and girls though so we all took turns (obviously).
It was a clean, cool and happy group that gathered for dinner tonight. Now everyone just needs a laundry…
The campsite was lovely and green with fairly soft grass and it was also terraced. The view was nice and a soft breeze both cooled us down, and kept the mosquitoes away. A really nice surprise find for the group even if getting the truck in meant the locals taking down some of the fence to drive through…
And some inquisitive locals also practiced their English and managed to make use of our leftover rice, giggling the
