I spent all day at my aunt and uncle’s place today visiting with them and with my cousin Ana and her husband Ube. The highlight of the day was eating a fish for lunch called “Tainha”, which is a fish that migrates from southern Brazil all the way up to Rio only when it gets colder. I think it was my first time eating it and it was delicious. I took a photo to show everyone. I also played a word game with Ana’s son Dudu on his iPad, putting together words in English to score points. He’s pretty good at it. Dudu is a sweet kid, his only flaw of course being that he likes Flamengo, my team’s biggest nemesis. J
During the Algeria vs South Korea game, we hung out outside in the patio that overlooks the ocean. The sun came out then and we almost went riding one of those stand-up paddle boards. By the time we were done chatting, the clouds were back and it got a little cooler. We have to remember that it’s winter here, so we really shouldn’t be thinking about doing any of these things, especially in the water.
At night,
we watched the USA vs Portugal game, which was a must-win game for Portugal. They took the lead very early only to relinquish it in the second-half. It looked like the US was going to get the win up until the 93
rd minute when Portugal tied it up with a header. The result keeps Portugal alive although they will need some help from Germany. Cristiano Ronaldo was invisible once again, looks like he’s still being bothered by knee issues. His performance in this tournament so far pretty much knocks him out of the running for the FIFA Balon D’Or award later in the year.
Tomorrow is gameday for the Brazilian National team. We play at 5pm against Cameroon and need a win to seal 1
st in the group. Earlier in the day, the big game is Chile vs Holland to see who will take Group B. This game is important for us as it determines Brazil’s rival in the Round of 16, but before I look too far, let’s make sure Brazil gets there. I’m still trying to sort out what I will do over the next 2 weeks and how I’m going to get there. Looks like my
flight to Brasilia will be the most tricky one to sort out. The good news is that there are tons of flights I can choose from, the bad news is the price (CDN$500 one-way).
I plan on going for a walk down the beach tomorrow morning and walk around town a bit. Then I’ll come back to watch the Chile-Holland game at home with my uncle and then go watch the Brazil-Cameroon at my cousin Ana’s friend’s house.
I’ve been pretty spoiled here at my godparent’s house. They make all sorts of delicious food, are always bringing me drinks, ask me what I want for lunch and dinner, want to buy me treats, picked me up at the airport, etc... I’m happy I get to spend some time here with them. Last time I saw them was in Cuba for our wedding in 2008. How time flies.
