Capybara
Group at end of the runway seeking the shade This is the first opportunity I have had to post from the Pantanal as the internet service here was down. This is my fourth day here at Pousada Ararauna, a lovely lodge located 150 km from Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. We have spent our days here sitting on the banks of the Rio Negro watching and taking notes on the behavior of the giant and neo-tropical otters. Other days, we travel in canoes or motorboats collecting scat, looking for dens, and looking for otter activity. There are over 400 bird species here and countless other animals to view and enjoy. Below are some pictures to enjoy and just a sampling of the flora and fauna to be found at this incredible place. Tomorrow, we travel to Campo Lourdes to join the bat expedition. I will post again when I reach Campo Grande as I will not have internet access again until then.
