Tim Version:
* Stayed at another kind couchsurfing host's house, and walked around Jeri and its beautiful sand dunes.
* Didn't get to windsurf as just like Puerto Escondido when this place is off season it is REALLY off season and crappy for it.
* Had a heavy night out ending up in me losing everyone in what is a very small town and waking up on a restaurant bench. All good fun =)
The windswept but not enough to windsurf version:
Well yes I could have windsurfed... but at a very very slow speed with no excitement and with me being the only one out there. Its also pretty damn expencive, prices close to home! So I didn't. But that didn't bother me, the place is beautiful anyway and I can see I need to come back in high season =) I should explain that Jericoacoara, where I am now, is last I heard rated at around the 3rd best place in the world to windsurf and that I why I came here to see it. Can I windsurf? Heh no, I've only done it once. But damnit I wanna learn! I need something when
I can't surf that is also on the water and this suits the bill.
I found a couchsurfing host kind enough to take me, and though my first night I rocked up at 2am so spent the night in a hostel, I stayed with her for the rest of my time there. Oh yeh, backtracking... Itacaré to here. 7 hours to Salvador, a day to kill in Salvador (I spent it very comfortably in Nega Maluca), a bus that left that evening taking 22 hours to get to Fortaleza, then another 5 hour bus, then one last bus that is an open 4wd dune cruising machine for the last run to Jeri since there are just sand tracks and not normal roads to get there. This place is pretty isolated =)
In Jeri i spent a fair chunk of time walking around the sand dunes and little Oasis´ that dot the area, up and over the green hills to the lighthouse, out and around all the beaches to the right, and often just spent time listening to music and staring at the ocean, a favourite pastime of mine. To do this in solitude, essential for me, is difficult
in Itacaré. Here, very easy to find your own piece of space and that I love. I find that I need time alone like this every now and again or I go a bit crazy and unsocial.
The weather, on and off again tropical rain, plays a bit of havoc with the place as it is one big sand pit. The sand dunes are fairly well protected it seems from mechanical wear and tear from motorbikes and dune buggies (dune buggies being the replacement for a car around here) and are mostly traversed by horses or by foot. You can take horse rides and buggy trips, although with the crappy weather, high expence and me not having anyone else I knew who would want to come, I skipped on the tours for now. They would be much better done in the on season with better weather and more people around to share expenses and experiences with.
Since I really just lazed around and enjoyed swimming, eating, sleeping, sea and star gazing (no light pollution here, it is incredible!!) and listening to Portuguese tapes, there isn't much more to write and the photos will do a better job of
giving a feel for the place.
As for the heavy night I mentioned up the top, at the end of my stay my host had a little drama with some friends so was in a drinking mood. There were also now 2 couchsurfers, French guys, staying at the same place. SO, with some Cachaça, some vodka, ice, limes, and sugar, through a period of probably 2 hours we sunk a whole lot of alcohol... very VERY easy to do with Caipirinhas (Cachaça asthe spirit) and Caipiroskas (Vodka as the spirit). Vodka however doesn't like me, as I don't like it... hence within a few hours, we were out on the street, having a bunch more Caipirinhas from the street stands near Sky bar. Last thing I remember, talking to a drunken guy who appeared to possibly be a bum... after that, I remember one flashback of being on the main street, then I woke up when daylight arrived on a restaurant bench that was facing the ocean and stumbled back home. The hangover, ouch. Howeve my host had a worse one... Vodka, why do you do such nasty stuff to me eh? While fun, it isn't something I want
to repeat in the near future, getting that drunk just sucks.... thankfully Jeri is an isolated pretty safe place so sleeping on a random bench isn't quite such a dangerous thing.
