Today Is NewYears Eve, And I call this email Bella Luna for two reasons. Now for the email…
Today is beautiful! Rafi’s family is here (about 20+ people) with us at the beach house. All the ladies cook a dish or two and the men will do up the BBQ tonight. I am doing my moms Famous mash-potatoes!! We have spent most of the day at the beach swimming and snorkeling. I have made good friends with Rafi’s little cousin Arielly. She is a sweet girl, and Intelligent Wow!! She has learned and memorized everything I have said in English!!!
I was making my potatoes around 5pm when I realized I needed more potatoes, Raf and I got on our bikes and headed to the village for the groceries. I went into one store to pick up what I needed and Rafi went into another for other peoples things. Next thing I know I am following Rafi and his fishermen friend to the fishermen’s house. We waited on the porch for a minute and all of a sudden he reappeared with a little tiny puppy in his hands. He did not have the time or ability to care for this
little thing, She was covered in fleas, and her feet were full of what I thought were burns. Any way Rafi and I talked for a minute, we were her only hope for survival. Next thing I had a little dog tucked under my arm and Rafi was going back into the store for flea soap and dog food. We talked on the way home. What would we name her… she is white with pretty Black spots. After tossing around a few names the Great Big New Moon rose over palm trees. A new year, a new start, the new moon. A new Puppy Named “Luna” (moon). Once we got her home we realized she was a lot worse of then we thought. Not only was she covered in fleas, but she had ticks in every nook. You could not see her ear canal, the ticks bottoms looked like brown bubbles in her ears, she had them in her arm pits and in between her paw pads. Then her paw pads.. I thought they had been burt by walking in the hot sand, nope… she had something call feira do porco.. Pig monster.. trust me the NAME is Much nicer
than IT is. Warts covered her paw pads, but the best part.. each wart had a worm and puss inside it.. Oh it was really nice.
They didn’t have flea medication at the store, so we removed each tick and each flea individually with tweezers, she had so much poison in her, she slept while we pulled each bug and poked needles into her feet. Her gums are white, and she has no strength. People are saying she is “Na Boca do Urubo” or “In the mouth of the vulture.” After telling you all that… She Slept outside this night!!
Any way the New Years Part. We had a big dinner at 11pm the BBQ was AMAZING!!! And mom… your Potatoes went over smashingly.. I had to pass the recipe around after. After, we all went down to the beach, Each Posada (hotel) had fire works. I have never had such an amazing New Year. Looking down the beach as far as you could see fireworks shot out of palm trees. The best Part… I Had the One I love in my arms, and me in his! After hugging every one and wearing out the words “Feliz Ano Novo” (Happy
New year”) Raf and I Ran into the ocean, talked about all we are thankful and lucky for and then we dove in! we stood in each others arms in the ocean, the moon lighting the water and sand, with the clearest and brightest sky I have ever Seen!! We stood there and watched as fireworks decorated the sky and people chanted happy songs into the warm midnight air.
After a walk down the beach, watching the funny traditions and superstitions take place. Probably 80% of the people on the beach wore white. People in groups of threes would jump 7 waves, making a wish, hope or something they were thankful for on each wave they jumped.
We ended our night by exchanging our secret Santa, and we were off to bed.
Sorry there are no photos now of New years... Turns out small beach villages don't like to stock AA batteries!! I will try and get others photos later.
Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I have to admit, for the ONE day of Christmas I Missed the Snow! Hope You are all Well!!
With all our love
