All week we saw these women on street corners braiding hair and sewing what looked like a terry towelling turban onto people’s heads. What was going on? What does this have to do with carnaval?

The answer is:

Sons of Gandhi is the most famous afoxe. The nearly 5,000 member all-male bloco is always a source of great anticipation. Founded in 1949 on the occasion of the City's 400 anniversary and as a way to honour the life work of the great Indian pacifist leader Mahatma Gandhi who'd been assassinated the year before. You'll see members wearing turbans with a blue sapphire distribute beads and other joyful surprises to the delighted audience. Their rhythm is called ijexá and they spray spectators along the parade route with perfume and talcum powder.

This day everywhere we walked there was a sea of white, today was officially the day of the Gandhi.
