Today's plan was to hit the beach. However, Vic was feeling pretty shit - feverish, throwing up,... as Vic would put it "not nice"... I wasn't going to leave Vic alone and had decided to stick around in case she needs me. I'm on holiday, I can chill anyway. I spend sometime looking at the surroundings near my youth hostel. Hopefully, you'll be able to see the photos. Basically, the building on the left is partially gutted and I can see the toilet... The building on the right only has some of its walls, and some of it is used as a parking. Our hostel is newly painted and may not be in the best state but, in comparison, it is great!
The rooms in Nega Meluca are not numbered but are referred to in colours. We are staying in the blue room, which has a tiny balcony overlooking the street.
After I had enough of staring at the buildings near by. I decided to get on that hammock (very comfy, I must say) and have a read about Salvador and what there is to do here. I probably should get the travel guide and copy what it said.
Basically, Salvador is quite a historically rich city. This is the reason why we came here. I was almost falling asleep... no idea whether it was the history of Salvador..or the comfort of the hammock.
I spend a good part of the afternoon catching up with my family and a couple of friends on Skype. My attempts to upload my photos on my msn space website failed miserably! 😞
In the evening, sat next to some people... thought I'd try and write about my impressions of Salvador...but I reached as far as writing exactly "Salvador" and underlining it!... I started chatting to Leila, a girl from Cheltham, livingin London as well as some other guys.
Vic was feeling still very ill so she went to bed... I could do no more and decided to go out. Afterall, Tuesday is a payday and people celebrate on the streets every Tueday. So, we had to go and check it out. And indeed. Loud music, people booging on the streets and in the main square.
Leila, an Israeli guy and I went out for dinner. My initial choice was not available, so I decided to pick something that had
no explanation in English or in Portuguse. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name of the dish... something beginning with M... I think... some of the ingredients it reminded me a bit of the enjuiada, I had at Leo's. Some meat ...and black/brown beans... with rice. It was arlight. Everyone thought it was the winner meal of all chosen. We had a carpirinha. And then had another 3 at the square whist observing people enjoying themselves dancing and listening to the music from the stage that was errupted especially for the event. The guy from the stall that we bought the 3 rounds of carpirinha was quite nice to us and gave us to try some of the fruit from the stall. And when it started drizzling he invited us to go under the shelter with them. It was really sweet. People instantly scared away even though it hardly rained and it was very brief. We met a few our hostelmates that night. It was really cool to meet familiar faces.
We came back to the hostel and spend a few hours on the balcony chatting to some people. The israeli guy seems to have tried all sorts of drugs.
He even got mugged whilst trying to buy some earlier today. Think he said they pointed a gun at him. Ah well... That aside, I had a pretty cool conversation with a Welsh guy who moved to Bristol.. but has been travelling for over a year with his French girlfriend. So many people I've m,et here and none of them is on a short break away. My two months seem like nothing, they are all travelling from a minimum of 6 months to a few years... (the day after I met Craig who's been on the go since 1995!)
As we were all chattering, I thought, how great of an experience this is to be able to meet all these people who've travelled in all sorts of places, the reasons why they are travelling and etc... I love it!
It was such a wicked night... Only to be "spoilt" when I returned to my bed and to find that my pillow had disappeared! The cover had been stripped out and left on my bed but the pillow was not insight! It was a full house and the other 7 people were already sleeping. I folded a couple of
tops and used them as a pillow!!! I found my pillow on the bed of the girl below mine on the following morning! GRRR! How inconsiderate! And what the heck was she doing with MY pillow! How rude!
