Day 261 - Saturday 7 June
It had been quite cold and bumpy but but we eventually arrived into La Paz the worlds highest city at about 8 in the morning. Everybody keeps raving about a hostel called Loki but as its going to be noisy and I want to catch up on some sleep, I found a small family home around the corner. I get my own room there with cable tv and free internet for a price of a dorm room in Loki.
After grabbing a shower (its been 4 days) and dropping my laundry off I went down with Russell to Ollies, an english pub. Its been a while and I want some english food. The fish and chips was brilliant. The European Championships start today but as England didn´t qualify I wasn´t planning on watching it. However now that they´ve started and it was on in the pub I ended up watching the games. Sat in Ollies who should walk in but Gary and Bart, so we had to stay for another pint to have a catch up. They´ve agreed to come out for my birthday on Monday.
They say you can party in
La Paz every night of the week but as the locals only go out at the weekend I made the effort to go out tonight. I can go out with Europeans back home. We were after some live music so after asking the locals in one of the bars we headed to a rock bar where a Lenny Kravitz tribute band was playing.
Just after two Russ and Pa wanted to head back and I felt like trying a different club so whilst they headed home I found a nightclub. It was pretty good and full of locals but tonight my luck wasn´t in.
Day 262 - Sunday 8 June
I got up just intime to watch the first football game. I really like the place im staying in theres noone ever about, its like being in your own home. I think i´ll saty here rather than move to Loki.
After watching the game we went to watch the midget wrestling. They do it every sunday and its Bolivias version of WWF. It was absolutely brilliant, really funny and one of the best things i´ve seen travelling. Because its more amature and less clean cut than
the American version it made it really entertaining. The crowd also get really into it and kept throwing orange peel and empty plastic bottles at the wrestlers they didn´t like. Although there were no midgets this week the women wrestlers were really funny even if I did get soaked from a bottle of lemonade one of them them stole from someone in the crowd.
We got back early evening and with it being my birthday tomorrow, and I´d had a late one yesterday i´m going to stay in and have a quiet one. Luckily there was a repeat of the second football game and theres loads of dvd´s in the house to watch.
Day 263 - Monday 9 June´
Its my birthday today and at 30 years old its all downhill from now on. To comiserate i´m planning on having a bit of an all dayer starting when the football starts. That gave me just enought time to organise my wildlife trip in the amazon. On the way there was some kind of protest march going on down the main street in town. There was absolutely thousands and thousands of Bolivians taking part. I asked what its
about and its something to do with the independance the east of Bolivia wants. I think this lot are against it. For good measure there also going to smash up the American embassy. I hope they dont cause too much trouble I dont wont all the bars shut on my birthday.
At half two I started my birthday celebrations. Myself and Russ headed to the bar in Loki hostel to meet Gary and Bart. They weren´t there but as the football was starting we stayed for a drink until half time. I´m glad im not staying here its full of gap year kids all coked up as its cheap and widely available. I was glad to leave at half time and after picking up Pa headed to Ollies the english pub.
After watching the game Gary and Bart showed up so we stayed for the second game. A few more beers later and I was starting to feel it. It didn´t help that places kept giving me free B52´s as its my birthday. It got to about eleven when we decided to move onto the club area. First of all though Russ dropped Pa back off at the
guesthouse so now it was just us boys. I think it must have been all planned because before we hit the clubs we stopped off at a strip club. As Bolivians prices go it was extortionate and as dear as London but I have to admit the quality was top notch. There must have been about 50 girls to choose from and there was a loud cheer as us white guys walked in. Well as its my birthday I decided to treat myself.
Day 264 - Tuesday 10 June
Surprisingly I don´t feel to bad today although it was lunchtime before I was up and about. I could hear a riot going on somewhere nearby so I layed low for a bit whilst I made a full recovery, before having a stroll around a couple of Plazas and the market.
Late afternoon I returned to the guesthouse and caught the end of the football before watching a repeat of the Spain v Russia game that i´d missed earlier. I´m going to have another lazy day so once the football finished I watched another dvd before saying goodbye to Pa. She flies home from Lima in just under
a fortnight so Russ and Pa are off to Peru tomorrow.
