Argentina - Buenos Aires and Patagonia

On January 18th we landed in Buenos Aires and as you have read in our previous Antarctica blog our first day we spent booking that amazing trip. After that was all settled and done, we had a couple of days of to enjoy the city. We were staying in a great boutique hotel, Che Lulu, in a very fashionable area of the city called Palermo. The days were filled with strolling through the city enjoying the architecture, shops and restaurants. We also visited the famous grave of Eva Duarte de Peron and many others at Recoleta Cemetery, quite bizar cemetery in the middle of the city.

We left Buenos Aires for the southernmost region of Argentina, Patagonia. This region borders Chili and it comprises the Andes mountains to the west and south, and plateaux and low plains to the east. It´s also way bigger then we expected. Because we had just booked our Antarctica trip we had limited time available in Patagonia and we decided to fly into El Calafate which is the main hub to visit different parts of the Los Glaciares National Park, including the Perito Moreno Glacier. After seeing glaciers in New Zealand we were very impressed by this glacier, we took a boat on one of the lakes to get a closer look and you constantly here it crack and very frequent we saw enourmous pieces of ice break of and fall into the water.

Besides the glacier we also visited the northern part of the park from a town called El Chalten. From there we hiked up into the park to get a glimps of Mountain Fitz Roy, we did had great views along the way, but the peaks of Fitz Roy weren´t visible because of the clouds. This still was a great hike.

After our glaciers and hiking we really had to make our way to the "end of the world" as the Argentinians call it or Ushuaia. This town is the most southern town of Argentina and the main harbor for Antarctica cruises. It´s also a great place to hang around, have diner or enjoy the night life. After we came back from our cruise we also visited the national park Tierra del Fuego, beautiful scenery and a lot of beaver dams.

From there we flew back to Buenos Aires to spent one last night in the city before departing to our next destination.

Op 18 januari zijn we geland op Buenos Aires en zoals je hebt gelezen in onze Antarctica blog, zijn we de eerste dag vooral druk geweest met het uitzoeken van die trip. Toen alles geregeld was, hadden we nog een paar dagen in de stad. We verbleven in een leuk boetike hotel, Che Lulu, in de yuppenbuurt Palermo. Met de metro hebben we de bijzondere architectuur, winkels en restaurans bezocht. Natuulijk hebben we het beroemde graf van Evita niet over geslagen, best bizar zo´n begraafplaats in het midden van de stad.

Vanuit Buenos Aires zijn we gevlogen naar het zuidelijke gedeelte van Argentie, Patagonie. In El Calafate zijn we naar het Nationaal Park Los Glaciares geweest om de Perito Moreno gletsjer te bekijken. We hadden een boottochtje genomen om nog dichterbij te komen en toen we aan het wachten waren op een stuk dat zou vallen, gleed er een heel gedeelte geruisloos in de zee en kwam weer helemaal boven, heel indrukwekkend, daarna hebben we minstens nog 6 stukken zien vallen met veel lawaai.

Ook hebben we het noordelijke gedeelte van dit park bezocht vanuit El Chalten. We hebben een paar uur naar boven gewandeld om een glimps van Mount Fitz Roy te zien. Onderweg hadden we prachtig uitzicht, maar toen we eenmaal op het uitkijkpunt waren aangekomen, was Fitz Roy niet zichtbaar vanwege de woken. Desondanks vonden we het nog steeds een goede wandeling.

Nadat we de gletsjer hadden gezien en wat gewandeld hadden, was het tijd om af te reizen naar ´het einde van de wereld´ zoals de Argentijnen Ushuaia nomen. Vandaar uit hebben we de cruise naar Antarctica gedaan en bij terugkomst nog een dag doorgebracht in nationaal Park Tierra del Fuego (Vuurland). Mooi park in een prachtige omgeving en heel veel beverdammen.

Daarna zijn we weer terug gevlogen naar Buenos Aires voor nog een laatste nacht in de stad, voor dat we naar onze volgende bestemming gaan.
