Over the Andes, Argentina and Mendoza. It is the height of summer so hot and busy. Still if you sleep during the afternoons and add a couple of ice cubes to your glass of red wine you are well away. The city itself is fairly functional, past earthquakes robbing it of the finer architecture, but the main Plaza Independencia is attractive and the focal point for outside cafe culture. At night it comes alive with street theatre and music, and is good for people watching. Head up to Aristedes Villaneuva for some more decadent nightlife (til 5am!) or out to the nearby bodegas for wine tours and tastings. We visited Maipu and Bodega La Rural where we enjoyed ourselves but it must be said the heat slowed us right down. Although the it could´ve been the wine.
