We woke up to perfect weather. THe sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky. Several people had mentioned an antique market on Florida Ave. that only happens on Sundays so we decided to check it out. It was fabulous! Great artisans, lots of street performers playing music, dancing salsa or whatever. Too bad the suitcase doesn´t have extra room for too much shopping. Andrea´s clothes are really taking up a lot of space! We walked most of the length of Ave. Florida and ended up in Plaza de Mayo. Beautiful square in one of the oldest parts of BA. We came upon La Casa Rosada and ended up on a Spanish only tour. I can´t really tell you much about the place other than what I gathered from looking around. It´s basically the equivalent of the US White House but (you guessed it), it´s pink. From the Plaza de Mayo we could also see the Obalisk and wandered around the area. We then headed to another part of town to check out the zoo and garden. We had high hopes of finding specimens of the infamous ¨ROUS´s¨. I´m not sure but I think we got some pictures of
them. The zoo otherwise was your typical city zoo only with lovely historic buildings for the interpretive and creepy crawly displays. I wouldn´t really recommend the zoo to anyone unless you really have nothing else to do (Leah wasn´t keen on going to a museum).
By then Snapper´s claws were getting tired of crawling around so we decided to find a nice restaurant and rest our claws/limbs for a while. We found a cute local pub and had the most delicious pizza. Lots of leftovers for late night snacks and next day lunch. When we finished dinner though it seemed the subway entrances were all closed. Having no cash left and no idea how to get back another way, we spoke with a police officer who gave us good instructions and then warned us of pick pockets on the bus. In the end we found an ATM and took a cab. It was an early night to bed after the last night´s antics and all day touring.
We woke up the next mornig to POURING rain. We took our time getting up and by the time we got organized and had breakfast it was noon. It worked out well
though because the rain finally stopped. We checked our bags and headed to Recolletta Cemetery (historical cemetary of all the famous and rich Argentinians). The place was fabulous. As you´ll see by the pictures Señor Snapper was very taken with Eva Perron´s grave site. We also checked out a beautiful church and wandered about the park before heading back to the hostel. We booked ourselves onto an overnight bus to Iguazu (20 hr. Cama Suite bus). Back at the hostel we got talking with a few other tourists and found out that several of them had had their wallets and/or passports stolen in the past two days. We were feeling pretty lucky that nothing like that had happened to us - it was a good reminder to never let our guard down especially in BA.
All in all, BA was fabulous. It´s such an easy city to enjoy. The people are super friendly, the architecture of the buldings is beautiful and there´s never a lack of things to do or restaurants to enjoy. I´m looking forward to our return to BA at the end of the trip.
