Strange gathering in the forest

The weekend I was in Pondicherry I ventured up the road and into Auroville for a few hours. It was a Sunday so when I decided I was done with walking and exploring I found myself without any way back to the main road; all the autos had taken the day as a holidy and all the locals had their own bikes and two-wheelers. I managed to get a local shop owner to give me a ride on his two-wheeler and on our way back we came across this very bizarre gathering in the forest.
