This area was the most fortified position along the coast. It's strategic advantage motivated the Allies to destroy the morning of the attack. 300 Army Rangers were selected to scale the cliffs to remove the battery. Two thirds (200) were killed in the attempt. They were successful in gaining control but discovered that the guns had already been removed.
