Abandonamos Madurai en un autobús ranqueante, que cruza llanuras y campos sorteando a vacas, cabras, monos y algun que otro pueblerino que cruza despistadamente la carretera. 3 horas mas tarde empezamos a ascender hacia el pueblo de Kumili, desde donde planeamos visitar el parque nacional de Periyar.
