Hagerman Melon Gravel

The ancient Lake Idaho flooded he land in a catastrophic long-ago flood called the Bonniville Flood. Hard pieces of basalt broke off and were carried by the flood waters. When the river widened in softer soils, the basalt boulders were deposited and littered the land where we see them today. The boulders are called melon gravel.
