The home state is Idaho and it is full of wonderful and scenic places. That's me and my son Michael last year on an overlook below Shoshone Falls on the Snake River. I am now looking forward to some great new adventures on the road. I’have been to Alaska before but this will be the first trip down the Alaska Highway through Canada. And there will be more travel adventures to come after that...

ALASKA, A COOKS TOUR It’s May and time for my trip to visit my brother who lives in Chugiak, Alaska, a small bedroom community in South-Central Alaska, about 20 miles north of Anchorage. I arrived in the early morning; it was still dark at their house. The sun was soon up and I heard a low howling by one or two dogs. In rapid succession more and more dogs joined in the synchronized baying. The eerie howl was enough to cause shivers, enough to make me imagine that I was in the midst of a wilderness or perhaps engrossed in reading The Call of the Wild. It was the wakeup call of the sled dogs kept at my brother and sister in laws house. Chugiak is a quaint collection of modern, homemade, cabin like and curious ... read more

Massacre Rocks The day was clear, the sun was hot and no wind, a perfect day for our overnight trip to Massacre Rocks. The park is located about 35 miles from Pocatello and is part of the Idaho State Park System. The park offers day camping and boating and offers canoe and kayak rentals during the summer season. Many hiking trails and marked flora and fauna signs help you navigate your way. The Oregon Trail wagon ruts are also featured in the park. Made over one hundred years ago and you can still see the scaring left by the hundreds of wagon wheels. Void and barren of any vegetation, they can be viewed for miles and are a reminder of those who came before us. RV and trailer parking is also available on two levels and ... read more

Trilobite Fossil Dig Near Delta, Utah It is often difficult to come up with fun, interesting learning experiences close to home that would be considered a full day trip or perhaps an overnight adventure. The U-Dig Fossil Quarry in Delta provided just such an opportunity. We were going to hunt down Trilobites, not to be confused with the pesky little furry creatures on Star Trek, Tribbles. Our little creatures lived at the bottom of an ancient sea bed some 500 million years ago, an invertebrate marine life which is now extinct. As the seas dried up the trilobites were encased in the limestone shale. The quarry is privately owned and is one of the world’s richest trilobite deposits, no reservations are required and prices are based on time allotments. 2 hrs. ½ day and 1full day ... read more

Planning a vacation can be fun, it can also be a major pain in ones anatomy; I found a little of both when I started to plan a 5 day trip to Las Vegas with my youngest son. Some back ground can help to understand the problems that arose. When my son was 15, I drove both him and his sister to visit my mother in Desert Hot Springs, California to spend the Thanksgiving holiday. It was the first such trip he had been on as a young man and we planned on staying overnight in Las Vegas at the Sahara. November in Las Vegas can be chilly which he found out when he planned on swimming in the outdoor pool which was not heated. A quick chilly dip and he opted for a walking tour ... read more

Salt Lake City Weekend March 13, 2011 Once in a while it’s fun to get away for an overnight respite; this was the case when my oldest son asked if I would like to accompany him to Salt Lake City. He had an appointment mid-afternoon on the 14th and suggested we could do some shopping around his appointment time. Who can say no to a trip especially when you can spend it with your son? My son was taking his retired K-9 with him so he searched the Internet for a dog friendly hotel; The Monaco popped up and was located downtown just a few blocks from his scheduled appointment. It is a 15 story renovated gray building which from the outside is not spectacular. Since its downtown, there is little to no decoration save for ... read more

Pattie and Ron's Vacation 2010 Day 5 Onward to Buellton and Solvang It was warmer in the morning, more so than yesterday and no fog to be seen. It was one of those rare San Francisco days. We packed the car, had a quickie breakfast and headed off towards US-101. Most of that part of the trip was on “freeway” heading towards Redwood City and onwards to San Jose. Once we passed through San Jose city proper the scenery started to change from intercity to suburbs then to open fields while we near the Salinas Valley area. If you like to eat salads and vegetables, chances are a significant portion of your food comes from this area. The fertile land produces truck garden produce of almost every kind. We saw field workers lined up in the ... read more

Pattie and Ron's Vacation 2010 - Part 4 When we arrived at Ft Bragg the skies were over cast. We quickly settled into our hotel and about two hours later decided to go to the Safeway store a few blocks down the street and pick up some T.V. dinners. We both were tired and decided to eat in the room instead of going out. To our surprise, when we opened the door, the fog had rolled in cutting visibility to about twenty feet. Ron had wanted to run in the morning. We feared the fog would put a damper on that. To our surprise, when we woke and looked outside the next morning, the fog had vanished. Clear skies greeted us and the sound of surf echoed in the distance. After a quick two and a ... read more

Pattie and Ron's Vacation 2010 – Part 3 Eureka to Fort Bragg Day 3 of our vacation dawned surprisingly fair, surprisingly, not too much fog in Eureka. However, down the road is another story. My son and I were going to drive down the famously picturesque US 1 until we reached Ferndale. The Victorian-themed town, going by the name of Cedar Creek, was the site of a movie about a plague carried by a pet monkey. A box office success, Outbreak starring Dustin Hoffman, debuted in 1995. It is an interesting town to visit. Up early, we ate a quick breakfast at the restaurant next door. A quick pack, a last look around the room, and we were off by 8:30AM. We left town on Main Street. It turns into US 1 about a mile outside ... read more

Pattie And Ron's Vacation 2010 Day 2 Crater Lake/Redwood National Forrest. Day two dawned clear, a mild 53 degrees. Wispy white clouds floating by. We got up early and made ready for our Crater Lake Adventure. The hotel offers an expanded continental breakfast and we ate our fill, grabbed two coffees to go and headed to the car. We headed west on Route 97 for about 26 miles before turning towards the park entrance. We took a brief side tour of a small town just before the turn off. Nice bungalow type houses, neat and tidy. One can only wonder what they do to support themselves way out here. Route 97 is lined with large pine trees and from what we could see they went back a good way. There was no evidence of clear cutting, ... read more

Pattie and Ron's Vacation 2010 Day 1 The long awaited day had arrived. August 1, was our departure date. We started our two week auto touring vacation, a journey departing from Pocatello, Idaho. Our first scheduled stop was La Pine, Oregon. My oldest son has never been to Crater Lake, Oregon and I thought what could be a more inspiring way to start a vacation than to have him experience the lake for a first time. We quickly approached the Idaho Oregon border shortly after leaving Caldwell, Idaho. The exit took us into the town of Ontario, a quaint small county town obviously proud of their pioneer heritage. The artwork on many exterior walls throughout the town depicted pioneers and the local Indians; scenes showing various stages of settlement. A two lane road took us though ... read more
