Monument to Turkmen independence

Known to expats, so we read in our guidebooks, as the plunger, although we didn't actually meet any to confirm. It is 128m tall because, now let me get this right, independence was gained on the 27th of October 1991....so 27 + 10 + 91 = 128, get it? That's another golden statue of Turkmenbashi in the foreground by the way.

A quick search of this website reveals that, aside from an American chap working in Turkmenistan posting his contact details, the last tourist entry for this country was September 2001. So it's hardly surprising then that of all the places we'd planned to visit on this trip the one that aroused the most curiosity amongst our friends prior to departure was undoubtedly Turkmenistan.
