It's quite dry here-
The Banks Peninsula is a volcanic area with fertile soil, however there are few trees. The hills are arid and covered in tussock. Most of the trees in the region were destroyed in large fires hundreds of years ago. Moa populations were dwindling, and Maori hunters set fires to smoke out the birds. These fires raged out of control and burned out large swathes of the eastern central South Island.
