There is a winter typhoon named Typhoon Durian, raging along well to the south of us (headed for central Philippines), and it will miss us completely. All is well, in other words.
I seem to have spoken too soon. Over 200 people died in the typhoon, mostly from mudslides.

This is the story of our first year living and working in Hualien County, on the east coast of Taiwan ROC. I am a schoolteacher in the junior high in Guangfu Township, and Lao-puo (Suzanne) studies Chinese at Buddhist Tzu Chi University in Hualien (where we live).
