Mount Rushmore was named after a New York lawyer, Charles E. Rushmore, who was in the Black Hills in 1885 researching mining claims for area mining companies. The official name change occurred on July 4, 1930 by the U. S. Board of Geographic Names. The sculpture of the presidents took about 14 years to complete.
