Some thoughts are that these people were sacrificed to the god of the volcano, but that doesn't really fit with practice in other Andean locations.

Arriving in the small village of Copacabana, nestled on the shores of Lake Titicaca, in landlocked and underdeveloped Bolivia, Kim and I both experienced a strong sense of culture shock.
