Entrance to the mission cemetery from the church, Mission Santa Barbara. The skull and crossbones, a type of memento mori, was often used to designate a cemetery in Spanish colonial days. (The skull and crossbones is commonly found at Franciscan cemeteries.) SB030

Arriving in Santa Barbara, our first stop was to visit the mission. Mission Santa Barbara, Virgen y Martir was founded on December 4, 1786 (the Feast of St. Barbara) as the tenth of California's twenty-one Spanish colonial missions.
