Mission Santa Barbara

Mission Santa Barbara Virgen y Martir. "The Queen of the Missions". The present church is the fourth at the site. Constructed from 1815 to 1820, it is considered the finest of all the mission buildings. The façade design was taken from Vetruvius' book of Roman Architecture. The church was probably constructed under the direction of a master mason, Jose Antonio Ramirez. Mission Santa Barbara was never abandoned, as were many of the other missions, and has remained under the direction of the Franciscans. 2201 Laguna Street. National Historic Landmark. National Register of Historic Places 66000237. SB035p1
