For a long time they didn't know it was made of gold
One funny thing about the golden Buddha at Wat Traimit is that for a long time they didn't know it was made of gold. They thought it was made of much cheaper material. But then they accidentally dropped it and the cheaper materal broke and revealed a hidden solid gold statue. /Ake

Hi Ake, I haven't logged in for a while - so nice to se all your comments. I hadn't heard that story about this golden buddha, but there's a similar story about the emerald buddha... apparently it had been clad in plaster to protect it from pillagers, but then forgotten about. Years later the plaster cracked when in was dropped and revealed the very sacred emerald buddha that they though had been lost :)
