I had to give Sharon a “Thirty-Minute Warning” as the time for mass approached. I had gotten up early to write the blog. It didn’t look like she was going to budge; but, once she started moving, there was no stopping her. I must have been “in the zone” because I was still typing when she returned, and I still hadn’t showered yet. So now I needed to get moving. The morning was not all that full of idle time. There were important things to do, such as: putting the laundry away, filling a new bag with laundry, eating breakfast, doing Sudoku, attending a lecture… all before having lunch. And you know what the nice thing about this on a cruise ship? Somebody else brings you the finished laundry, somebody else does the laundry, somebody else ... read more

Today is one of our “Catch-Up” Sea Days; but, it seams that we are pretty much on schedule posting blogs for the previous day. We sort of slept in; since, even though it is a Sea Day, Sharon doesn’t need to rush off to mass on this Saturday morning. She’ll be going to the Vigil Mass at 5:00PM and she won’t need to go tomorrow; and, that’s a good thing because tomorrow is a very busy day for us, with an All-Day tour. We’ll be in Reykjavik and we’ll be staying overnight. We barely made it to the Rotterdam Dining Room before they stopped serving breakfast at 9:30AM. Another couple was already seated by the window at our table for four. And evidently, they’d already ordered as well. I ordered Eggs Benedict (again) with hashed browns ... read more

Some people don’t like sea days. It’s a good thing that we do. For one thing, it gives us a chance to catch our breath instead of going on a tour day after day to the point that it becomes a grind. And also, like yesterday, we found ourselves with an unscheduled sea day. We’ve been on cruises where fellow passengers would insist that if they missed a port it was due to some sinister plot by HAL to keep them on board to buy more things in their onboard stores; or, just to ruin their vacations! That doesn’t seem to be the case on Voyage of the Vikings where the norm is to be a 4-star or 5-star mariner and there seems to be an appreciation that the captain’s primary focus is our safety. And ... read more

Sharon went off to mass and I finished up the blog. This had all the markings of one of those lazy days at sea that would let us catch up on everything; but, looks can be deceiving. Nonetheless, it started out that way. We took our breakfast in the dining room. I thought the menu had changed; but, it was just the color and presentation. I got a frittata and muesli, and maybe I went off diet a little with two of the hash brown cakes and two sausages. I really have been good though by forgoing the bread and rolls at meals. This frittata seemed to be more of a fried egg white than I remember them as being, and the bowl of muesli was much bigger than I remember; although, it only had one ... read more

I really love to cruise. My favorite part about crusing is the food. I have recently learned about history of cruising as well as some aspects of cruise agents. Not only that, I have been a Cruise Caregiver for 1.5 yrs now and I have discovered how working on cruise and playing is awesome. I mean I got to help some clients on cruises. I got paid to do it as well as traveling to exotic places and getting free rooms, etc. I really loved my career and very soon I'm going back to school to get my BSN-Rn Nursing Degree in January 2019. The aspects I love about cruising are: Food, Entertainment, Shows, Casinos,as well Cruise Excursions, Banquets,Room, etc! I really love to cruise! I love booking cruises as well as I enjoy seeing journeys through boat. ... read more

Today we are still sailing the Atlantic. It is thanksgiving. Wishing all of you still on land a Happy Thanksgiving. all of the ships restaurants, regardless of ethnicity will offer turkey and stuffing tonight. We are going to Red Ginger, the wonderful Oriental restaurant. I will not be having turkey. I will be having sea bass in Miso, their signature dish. It will be yummy. If I knew how to make it, I would have it every year for Thanksgiving. The sun is shining right now and the temperature is very pleasant. We have had three rain showers, two during the night and one around 10 am. This morning when I went for my walk around the deck they had 7 men there mopping and squeeging (if there is such a word) the deck. Everyone of ... read more

AT SEA November 22, 2017 Today we are at sea. Yesterday we were in Las Palmas canary Islands which was our last land port before setting out across the Atlantic Ocean. We didn’t get off in las Palmas because as we were sitting on our balcony looking out at the calm sea and commenting on the beautiful weather, a large ship appeared in the horizon. It was the new Queen Elizabeth, a Cunard behemoth, 92,000 tons carrying 2100 passengers. It docked right next to us. You know how it feels when a 6foot 5 man or woman, weighing 4,50 pounds stands next to you. You feel very petite. Well that’s how we felt on our petite ship, 66,000 tons, carrying 1200 passengers. Last night we had a fantastic meal at LaReserve. 7 courses paired with wine ... read more

Cruise food is fantastic! At first, the choices seem endless and they do try for creativity, especially sharing the foods from the many cultures represented in their staff. I appreciated the consistency, especially because having passed through so many time zones, it was difficult to get my stomach in synch at first. The buffet dining room had 10 large serving counters, 8 that were 10’ ovals and two backed up to short-order stations. These two stations always served omelets, poached eggs and toast in the mornings, burgers, pizza & fries for lunch and steaks or fried chicken at dinners. The really good, creative dishes were found on the ovals with anything from grilled vegies, roast meats or fish and 4-6 types of starches nightly. The salad ovals had pre-made pastas, rice and vegies plus an endless ... read more

The Good Stuff Sunrise - Unless I were a poet (or even an exceptional writer), I could probably describe my feelings when watching the sunrise from the Atlantic Ocean each morning, my pictures will have to show the incredible colors, grandeur and sheer beauty of the mornings at sea. My father used to lovingly chide me for my love of sunsets. He would say, "What really counts is seeing the new day in the light of sunrise" and I finally get it. Most of the time I spent watching the sunrise solo, from the back fantail on Deck 11. People couldn't access this popular spot easily until after the dining room opened at 0730 (7:30am). I simply walked to the top deck (12) then slipped down a stairway onto 11, and was by myself until early ... read more

Breakfast was up in the Lido, and today being Saturday, Sharon would be attending the Vigil Mass later in the day. It’s never fun waking up to the realization that the time to pack is neigh and what once seemed a never-ending vacation is almost at its end. With the refunds to my account from several tours that I’d canceled I had a negative balance on my cruise account, so I bought the bingo cards today. Today’s crowd was the biggest yet, and even Linda and her husband John showed up, as good Catholics do. But my system of waiting until card sales are nearly through didn’t work today, as it did at our last bingo when Sharon won. We both got to briefly stand; but, the bingo gods weren’t smiling on us today. It was ... read more
