1. Rock Piles Cpt Cook Hwy
Rock piles on the shoreline, Captain Cook HIghway Woke reasonably early this morning, sat out on the private deck with a cup of coffee before heading having a final swim before we packed up to leave Port Douglas, the town was very busy as there was a Sunday market at the harbour, we would have stopped for a look around put had around 450km to cover today so gave it a miss.
We did a quick stop along the Captain Cook Highway heading back down to Cairns when we spotted an area where people had built numerous rock piles, again we marveled at how lovely this coast line is.
Once we cleared Cairns the land opened out and all you could see for miles around were fields of Sugar Cane, the whole area has a network of narrow gauge railways that they use for moving the cane around on the ‘Cane Train’, I’ve never seen anything like it. We then started to see a lot of Banana plantations and there were plenty of stalls along the road selling fresh fruit; Bananas, Water Melon, Lychee, Mango and Pineapples.
We reached a place called Babinda at around lunchtime and there was a sign for the Babinda Boulders, once
2. Mosaic Stingray
A tile Mosaic of a BlueSpotted Ray at Mission Beach we got there we saw it was extremely popular with the locals who use it for a swimming area so use the shade of a tree to have a spot of lunch and then hit the road once more.
We did decide to take a detour off of the A1 Bruce Highway and drove down to Mission Beach, very much a holiday destination and what a fabulous beach, I even ventured into the sea for a short paddle, braving the chance of a sting from a Jelly Fish, the water was crystal clear and so warm! There were beware of the Cassowary signs all around here and it is known at the Cassowary Coast,
We rejoined the Bruce Highway and the next stop was short and sweet to capture a shot of a huge crab above a bar and seafood restaurant in Cardwell and then the scenery changed once more and we found ourselves driving through an avenue through lots of trees, at the far end of which was the Hinchinbrook lookout, unfortunately a tree and some electric wires from a pylon spoilt the view.
Back on the road we passed through Ingham and headed to Townsville,
3. Giant Crab
Caedwell threw up this giant crab on a fish restaurant which is much bigger in size then we had expected, as it was Sunday we prebooked our Motel and are right on the waterfront. We left Port Douglas in 32° heat which rose to 36° at one point and it is still 32° at 6pm in Townsville, slightly less humid now though.
As we are by the sea front, we had a walk along to find somewhere to get food, we have found eating out is quite pricey so settled on a Sports Bar (Wetherspoons…ish) then crossed to a bar where we could here the waves crashing for a nightcap. They have some amazing trees around here, they have tendrils that hang down from the branches and where they get to meet the ground they root, the result is a tree that has many trunks, very odd! See todays pics for an example!
