Hey everyone!
Its been a while since I updated the blog so i'll give a quick update on whats been going on over here. Overall things are going really well and i'm really happy here. I'm in town today to pick up some baby chickens for the RTC (yep thats right, i love my life) and run some errands. We're doing a faol project at the RTC with some egg layers that came from New Zealand, there's about 30 baby chicks and the students are gonna raise them then sell the eggs. They came last Friday, but the manager couldn't get them because it was pay day and all the trucks were full. We had a scare for a while that they were stolen because the airport said they didn't have them, and if so they'd be dead because you have to feed them some special food. But luckily some man just took our chickens with his, phew. They are pretty expensive because their sent from New zealand so i'm happy they are still alive and ill carry them back today on a truck. And at the end of the year I'll get to eat eggs all the time yay.
I've been pretty busy lately, all of us RTC volunteers have had to do social audits at the RTCs close to us so I just went to another RTC a few days ago, Pektel RTC in Benanavet. I stayed for 2 days to do the audit and the manager wanted me to work with the Home Care teacher. The road is a little treacherous to get there, about a 45 minute drive, but the truck i took got stuck on the way. There's a little river to cross that goes right up a steep hill and the truck started rolling back and then got stuck in the mud. The driver didn't seem too skilled, i was kind of scared. But then some strong young men from a village close by came out to push the truck so we made it safely. There's a beautiful black sand beach that goes on forever and I could drink kava there hehe. Everyone was really welcoming to me and appreciative that i came. It was a really good visit, I really liked that village and kind of wish it was mine. I taught a cooking class while I was there and they wanted me
to demonstrate a recipe so we made island pizza and popo salad (papaya salad), that was the first time i made the island pizza, but luckily it turned out to be really good. You make the pizza dough, then put coconut milk as the sauce, onions, island cabbage, and vegetables. yumm. Anyway I'm planning to go back soon because they need a lot of help there too...
This term at the RTC I'm going to teach cooking to the 4 girls, tourism to 2nd year students (there's a total of 3) , and business again with my buddy Pastor Simon. So I'm going to be pretty busy. We have a bunch of projects going on which is great and we actually have money now. The price of copra went up so the students can pay the school fee now from last term. They are doing a garden project and just planted like 20 kinds of vegetables to sell, they planted some hardwood trees to sell when they grow a little more , then we have a pig project, the school store, and the girls and I are going to sell things from the cooking class. Next week we're making gato, which is like a kind of donut shaped like an 8 and we're going to sell them. We dont have a sewing or weaving teacher anymore because my host mama had to go to the village where my brothers school because their host mother passed away. So now we are advertising for another teacher...
In my free time I've been keeping busy too. The 2 girls students (Erelyn and Carolyn) that stay in Wowo and I have been hanging out and playing music. We've been playing around with my guitar, and my ukelele and singing, and there's nothing better than that. They are talking about starting a girls string band which would be awesome. Just need a bass and tambourine player.
My 2nd kitten passed away, Chiquito and I think i am done with cats for a while. I left him for like 4 days and asked someone to feed him but i think they forgot, When I got back he was really weak and wasnt cleaning himself then i came back to my house to find the little guy dead outside. I think i'm going to get a puppy soon, trying to find a cute one.
That's all for now, will try to post some photos soon too.
Send my love,
Marie
