Thought it was time for an entry in my blog and seeing as it's a lazy rainy Sunday, I don't have an excuse or distraction from writing. Rainy season has officially begun here in La Gloria and most parts of Costa Rica. As of today, we have had 9 DAYS STRAIGHT of rain. Yesterday it stopped for about a total of 2 hours the whole day. Everytime it stops I think this must be the end, it can't possibly rain any more. And soon I am proven wrong as the cold wind and rain returns just as I am putting my solar panel out or attempting to dry my clothes. Luckily and surprisingly I have only lost power for a few hours during one of the rainy days and water was not potable for a ... read more
Wow turns out I can't attribute my low entry frequency to my lack of internet... I think I had more motivation to write blog entries in Vanuatu when I had internet once every 4 months. I have no excuse now other than laziness, I now have electricity and internet access that is almost perfectly reliable 24/7. Since the last entry, I have completed Pre Service Training, sworn in as a volunteer (for the second time), gone on my 30 day vacation to the US and Mexico, and arrived here at my new site, La Gloria on January 21st. Going to the US this time coming from Costa Rica rather than Vanuatu was not quite as exciting as from Vanuatu. I mean I had coffee makers and electric frying pans in my training house in San Gabriel ... read more
Yesterday was a big day, not only was it my 25th birthday, but it was also site assignment day which is when we all find out where we're going to live for the next year or two years for most people. To make the day more interesting and enjoyable Peace Corps was kind enough to bring us all to a nice country club outside of San Jose. This club was equipped with several swimming pools, lounge chairs, hot tub and sports facilities and it was a beautiful sunny day. So I got to spend my birthday basking in the sun by the pool, couldnt ask for a better day (Thanks Posh Corps). At lunch, we had a delicious thanksgiving meal that the staff made for us with turkey, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, and stuffing. The only ... read more
I'm entitling this entry confusion because that's how i feel a lot of the time here when im with my host family or trying to communicate in spanish. I understand some things, but most of the time I'm confused about what's going on. Last sunday i was pretty sure i was going to church and got a little dressed up, but then it turned out i was going with my host sister to her boyfriend's house and not to church. And yesterday I asked what we were doing that day and heard something about pizza so I thought we might be going somewhere else to eat pizza, but it turned out that didn't happen at all so I guess it was just a joke. It is really tiring to try to understand all the time and ... read more
I recently arrived in Costa Rica from Vanuatu, with a 48 hour layover as you might call it in CT. It´s been kind of a whirlwind of emotions and culture change for me going from the Pacific Islands to Costa Rica. I started in Vanuatu, a place where i've learned to adjust to my simple life in my village, then to home in america, where i returned to the family, friends, and lifestyle i'd known before that life, and finally here in costa rica where i'm immersed in both american and costa rican culture being around americans and now living in a costa rican household surrounded by spanish. It´s a lot to process and take in and it's going to take a little while to adjust. Compared to PC Vanuatu this kind of feels like PC ... read more
This entry is long over due. Unfortunately I no longer have the luxury of internet on the island available for public use because the 1 computer that sometimes sort of worked is broken and has been broken since last December so it doesn’t seem like it will get fixed soon. I don’t know where to start, 4 months is a long time to cover... In that time I’ve been to the US and back jumping between 2 completely different cultures and lifestyles. Even the plane ride was culture shock, but in a good way, I went from building fires to cook, peeing in a hole, and lights out at 8 pm to first class treatment: “Right this way miss, would you like more champagne”? I bought more than enough magazines to keep me busy on the ... read more
There's this word in Bislama: "Manbus", pronounced man bush and it refers to someone who's been in the bush too long. In the village they call people manbush when they like dont know how to work something or haven't been out of the rural area much. Like if theres a kid staring at me because im white, they'll be like stop staring, manbush! Well turns out ive only been in Vanuatu a year but manbus tumas. I arrived in Brisbane on Monday night and my journey here and time here so far has been a little overwhelming and I realize how manbus I've become. I'm really glad I was able to spend some time here before coming to the US so I can adjust a little bit and wont have quite the culture shock. When I ... read more
I am still in Port Vila and have been here for about a week. Before I came here I was in Santo for a week doing some work on my Masters Intl project. I came to Port Vila for a safety and security meeting because right before I left for Santo I had some more issues with creeping. I think I explained before but "creeping" is what guys do here when they like a girl. They go to her house in the middle of the night and "singout" to her to let him inside the house. Sometimes the guy and girl agree to meet in the night, but often times the guy just comes without any warning because he likes the girl. There is no dating here and everything is done very much behind close doors. ... read more
It's a good thing I've learned not to keep my expectations too high here. The first leg of the journey went pretty much as planned. But after that, pretty much all the plans to visit various bungalows and custom dances started falling through. The tourism office developed their budget for this trip based on the assumption that I would be traveling on the cameraman's yacht without talking with him and on the assumption that the yacht would reach each place in very little time. So turns out after visiting Southwest Bay, Walarano, and the bungalows in Norsup and Lakatoro there was no longer funding for me to go to Ambrym and Paama. I was traveling with Laura and we got to meet some interesting people on our journey to southwest bay. On the way down to ... read more
Hello friends, hope all is well. I'm using the internet at the tourism office now. I was supposed to leave today for my work for the tourism office but not surprisingly there was a problem with the funding so i am leaving tomorrow and they put me in a guesthouse for the night with electricity and everything so i cant complain. I'm going to be making a tourism audit for Malampa Province, and at the same time there will be a tourism promotion video being filmed which they said i might need to pop in and pretend im a tourist for. Tomorrow we're starting in Southwest Bay ,Malekula where there is some sort of festival, taking a truck halfway and then taking the cameraman's yacht the rest of the way. Then we're coming back up north ... read more
