Hi All,
After Christmas we headed off to Te Anau, a small town close to Milford Sound. We stayed here for one night and just took a walk around and chilled in the holiday park. We played some frisbie and even the ice cream man popped in for a visit which made us both very happy haha.
The following morning we got up very early and headed off to Milford Sound. For the most part the drive was easy and very scenic, unfortunately we did not have great weather so visibility wasn't great but it was still beautiful, the road did get very narrow in places and very windy so it took a good 2 hours to get there. We had booked a tour with Mitre Cruise for a 2 hour cruise around the sound. Waiting to board the boat was a nightmare though there were sandflies everywhere landing on your hands and face so we had to stay well wrapped up and we were stinking of deet haha. The cruise was beautiful, we had commentary on board and we got very close to waterfalls and got some great shots of seals. It got pretty rocky when we hit
the open sea too. Laura was not looking very well for a good 15 minutes but thankfully it wasn't long before we were back in the calm waters of the sound again. The views through the sound are just fantastic and with the mist sitting on them this day it made them look very cool.
On the way back to Te anau which was a bit hairy trying to get our under powered van up some of the hills we took our time stopping off at different look outs and doing short walks getting to see more waterfalls and beautiful scenery. The weather was not on our side though so we did not see as much as we would of liken to. We headed back to the holiday park in Te Anau and it was lashing rain so we were chilling in the van reading when we noticed the van was leaking in several places!! So we called Mighty and they told us to go stay in a hotel for the night on them and it would be fixed tomorrow! We didn't argue we checked into a lovely hotel and enjoyed the luxuries of an ensuite and TV again
haha
The following day we drove to Queenstown and got the van fixed, then grabbed some yummy Sunday lunch in an Irish bar by the lake. We then hit a little town called Cromwell and decided to stay here a night to break up the drive to Wanaka. We stayed in a nice holiday park and we heard there was a Speedway in town so that evening we headed around to the track to watch the races. We stood out a mile haha but we tried our best to fit in by sitting on the hill with the locals munching on hotdogs and drinking hot chocolate it was a really fun experience even if it was very dusty!
We have had a great few days and were beginning to get over the feeling of being homesick that we have had over Christmas. We are really missing everyone at home but we are having the time of our lives and know we will be home soon!
Chat soon everyone,
Love Laura & Ian xxx
