The camper left for us in Christchurch airport car park
After bringing in the New Year in fantastic style on Waiheke island, Greg, Jamie and I caught a flight to Christchurch to pick up our new home for the next month; our camper, the aptly named ‘merry jape mobile’.
In a truly unorganized fashion we didn’t arrange a camper van, or even investigate getting one until the day before we were ready to start our trip, on the 3rd Jan. It was at this point that we learned that we weren’t actually the only people with the idea of renting a camper van, in fact, it turns out that its one of the most popular things to do at this time of year………huh, go figure. As a result we spent most of the day phoning companies being told that there vans were all booked up many months ago and will not be available until at least the end of march. Great! Well we pursued anyway and were lucky enough to find one available, in Christchurch, so off we went. It was left for us in the airport car park and we soon realized that it probably wasn’t so much that the van was available because no body else had needed it,

LET THE FUN BEGIN
rather, nobody else WANTED it……….it was on it’s last legs, (or axles). Anyway, as long as it didn't break down, it would suit us fine, so off we went.

These are the main places we stopped on our trip:

  • Christchurch
  • Oamaru
  • Dunedin
  • Beach on the south coast
  • Te Anau
  • Milford sound
  • Queenstown
  • Mt. Cook
  • Wanaka
  • Franz Joseph Glacier
  • Nelson

A short concise blog I think you'll agree.

I have just graduated from Imperial College London with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. I have a job with Shell starting in February, which means until then I have 6 months to travel and see a bit of the world! Thought it would be a good idea to get a travel blog going so those interested enough can keep up to date on my where abouts, it also has the advantage of saving me from having to write loads of emails with similar content. Bear in mind internet connection is not always easy to find out here and when it is it's generally not the fastest, but I'll do my best to keep my travel blo... full info
