Milford sounds was as beautiful as it was last year despite the grey cloud and threat of imminent rain. We got off the boat feeling relaxed and having had a good dose of fresh air. One comment I would make is that there was decidedly less snow on the mountains this year compared to last. We jumped in the car and decided to make the long drive over to the opposite coast and make base in Dunedin for the night. It was a long drive, and at times we were the only car on the road with only fields for miles around- slightly concerning! We arrived late evening, had dinner and basically went to bed early after a long day- god we're getting old.
The next day poured and I mean pored with rain, constantly! We decided to have an admin day and battle the backpacks. It was the first time we had to close them in a long while! It was as bad as I remember- why it never fits I just don't know.
The next day was raining again but we needed a change of scenery and headed into town for a tour of the Cadburys chocolate factory! We
were both like little kids again with the free chocolate and the huge chocolate fountain. Oh and did I mention the sample of liquid chocolate for breakfast!!! Theres a lot of marshmallow on kiwi chocolate, which I find odd. A little girl did turn around to me and say it's special because it's New Zealand chocolate- I didn't have the heart to tell her it's actually English!
Hyped up on sugar we headed over to the Speights brewery for a quick sample of the goods! I am pleased to report back that the apples here are also good and not poisonous!
As our trip is coming to an end we have to head back to Christchurch to clean up the car, send some postcards and get sorted to skip across the pond to Australia. That said we began the long drive back. We stopped off at the Moeraki boulders in the rain for a quick look- more geography!! All I can say about this is ( In donkey from shrek's voice) That is a nice boulder! It does make me chuckle how kiwis make a tourist attraction out of the strangest things! Still back into the car for a bit
more driving.
Arriving at Julian and Jem's was like arriving in heaven! A hot shower, washing on and dinner in our bellies we chilled out with an evening of Julia Roberts on Netflix!
The next day was really packing, clearing out the car and we quickly popped in to see Jay again.
All in all a lovely way to round up our time in New Zealand. We really have been lucky with the people who have let us stay and with the amazing things we have done.
Next stop - the land down under!!! Lots of love Lauren and Jo
