Background: The Polynesian Maori reached New Zealand in about A.D. 800. In 1840, their chieftains entered into a compact with Britain, the Treaty of Waitangi, in which they ceded sovereignty to Queen Victoria while retaining territorial rights. In that same year, the British began the first organized colonial settlement. A series of land wars between 1843 and 1872 ended with the defeat of the native peoples. The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. New Zealand's full participation in a number of defense alliances lapsed by the 1980s. In recent years, the government has sought to address longstanding Maori grievances.

On the way to Milford Sound

Last time we checked in.. we were getting our van fixed... good news it only took an hour to change out the pads. Scary as the front brakes went out while we where driving out of the Fiords. We found Stu's famous fly fishing shack and Ken bought a rod and reel.. We found a great stream (opening day) and spent the afternoon fishing for trout. We wrapped up the day driving into Queenstown. we were suprised to discover that it was Halloween and met William Wallace at a pub. We were tired.. and walked around finding a place where we [View Full Entry]

So having been sitting it out in Te Anau trying to get to Milford Sounds Steve and I decided that Monday was the day to move onwards and head back to Queenstown. So I rolled out of bed at 9am and jumped in the shower. On getting back to the dorm Nick asked whether I had checked if the road was open Iconfirmed I hadn't as I was going with the assumption that it was shut however switched on my netbook to check just in case and surprise surprise it was open. Fast movements were then seen around the room from [View Full Entry]

29th May 2009 Unfortunately another day lost to travel, after 5 hours driving we arrived in Te Anau. After finding out about cruises around Milford Sound, we ended up visiting a bird sanctuary. Slight unimpressed and extremely tired from our adventure yesterday we ended up having a nap. Our nap became so long that we the supermarket had closed by the time we woke up. This forced us to go out for an Italian meal, at least we didn't have to cook. 30th May 2009 It was another 2 hour drive along the world famous Milford road until we reached Milford [View Full Entry]

july 15th, 2009: had an early start in the morning. first tip is to avoid booking milford sound tours online. just do it when you arrive in new zealand. believe me, they've got tons of options and the prices are usually cheaper. in addition to better rates, you get to use all the discount coupons you get for free from brochures available at airports and hotels. if you do not know where and how to get these brochures, just go to the airport information desk and/or the hotel concierge. it is a long drive going back and forth from queenstown, so [View Full Entry]

We spent our second night in Te Anau in the Ranch public house listening to the house band murder some classic songs and some local builders telling us that the Queen secretly ruled the world. The drink didn’t help as much as you’d think. We woke up the next morning expecting to be told that the Milford Road was still closed and so we’d be heading off for Queenstown (Adventure Capital OF THE WORLDä). To our surprise the road was going to be open that day, so having waited around just for this eventuality we sorted ourselves out and headed north [View Full Entry]

The first thing you will notice about this blog title is that I thought about it in the same train of thought that I thought of the Fox Glacier one. The second thing is the use of the world sound to mean good. I hasten to add, this is not part of my usual vocabulary, but it did seem appropriate in this instance. I went from Queenstown to Milford Sound with a company known as Eco-Tours. Why don't you try and guess why I chose them above the myriad of other companies that run buses there. While you're thinking, I'll just [View Full Entry]

Day 79 (Wednesday 08/07/09, NJJ) Up at 7.30am. Picked up at 8.10am for our day trip to Milford Sound. The scenery on the journey along the Milford Road, from Te Anau to Milford Sound, was stunning. We passed through tussock country, native bush, alpine mountains and the Homer Tunnel. It was very frosty for the early part of the journey and this made the view even more beautiful. We thought Te Anau Downs and Mirror Lakes were amazing but we were told the best was yet to come. We arrived at Milford Sound by 11am in time to board the Milford [View Full Entry]

As there is nowhere to stay at the Milford Sound, the nearest place to stop is Te Anau. This is where our criminal life began. The Great Lakes Holiday Park had good facilities and a lovely TV room with a roaring log fire and so this was the place where we attempted our first blag at only paying for one of us to stay, so whilst Geen did the bizz booking in etc, yours truly hid out in the back and pretended she was invisible. Result! We were in, paying only $13.50 instead of $26. Which made us feel somewhat guilty, [View Full Entry]

23/06/09 Tuesday Day 312 Crazy early start this morning. Our bus is at 7.15am and we would be in Milford sound around 1.15pm. The bus was full as soon as we picked up the last people. Also the bus driver made everyone sit in the bus starting from the front seats. Luckily we got the front seats. The only bad thing is that there’s no leg room. No sooner had we left when we had a casualty! This one decided to become sick and the roads hadn’t even become windy yet. So she sat in the jump seat in the front [View Full Entry]
