Southland to Te Anau

Overnight stop...Overnight stop...Overnight stop...

At cosy nook...

Having kitted our selves out cheaply with warm clothes at the Warehouse, we now have to deal with the SANDFLIES

Loads of the little blighters...

(They are really black flies, but Captain Cook called them sandflies when he came across and now everyone calls them sandflies.)

Their bites are worse than mozzzies.
Not only do you feel them biting you, but the after affects last for days.

Whinging poms again you may well say!!!!
But not only us, every nationality was complaining.

(It must be the pleasure /pain factor.
See something pleasurable, then something comes up and bites you in the arse - literally.
Same thing in Oz)

Everyone you meet is talking about the damn things and about how much worse it is on the west coast!!!

So with our newly bought fly spray for clearing the tent and car, we head into the beautiful Fiordland.

Only to find, our mozzie repellent had no effect on them!!!!

About 30 bites later we discovered that the only thing they didn't like was DEET.....

So guess what?

We got some and a few still had the nerve
Long drop lodge...Long drop lodge...Long drop lodge...

You can even hear the splash outside...
to have a go!!!

Poor "Skim" as usual, came off worse than most.

So scratching as we went, we soldiered on further north.....

sandflies.
Urh those sandflies sound revolting as you say worse than mozzi's. The place looks fantantic although a little chilli to what you are used too. Does look a little desserted tho. How can you say that the car is comfortable for sleeping i thought you'd be more so crumpled in there, warm tho. all sounds brill a lifetime experience. xx
