at Nugget Point maybe? Saturday 16th September 2006 We left Te Anau and headed down to Invercargill. We stopped off at Bluff, and had some sea food (Bluff is famous for it) in the Drunken Sailor restaurant over looking the sea. We had Oysters, Scallops and Blue Cod - all really nice. Sure my Dad would have loved it!
We were hoping to make it over to Stewart Island, but it was too rough and wouldn’t have been very nice when we got there. So Stewart Island eluded me for a second time.
Instead we left Invercargill (not a very nice place) to drive along the coast of the Catlins. Well we tried to leave, we managed getting lost and ending back where we started - it took over two hours to leave Invercargill! Can imagine my Dad’s knowing nods LOL But to be fair Mum’s directions for the rest of the driving were very good and I was just as lost as to how we ended back at the arsehole of NZ two hours after trying to leave…
When we made it to the Catlins we saw two huge sea lions at Waipapa Point (nearly stood on one!). We tried to

at Nugget Point maybe? get to Slope Point (the true most southern point - not Bluff), but access was closed due to lambing. We had a quick stop a Curio bay for petrified fossilised wood, but no dolphins at Porpoise Bay again :-( We also stopped off for a view from Florence Hill Lookout, very nice I expect (I don’t remember).
We spent the night at a tiny campsite called Papatoga Motor Camp. The guy there spent a rather long time trying to get me to park the campervan at the right place and angle for maximum cover from the wind while remaining level - he got fed up with me in the end I think.
Sunday 17th September 2006 I spent the morning winding my Mum up by ‘rally driving’ the campervan along single track gravel roads to get to Nugget Point. After lots of "James!! You'll wreck the bloody tyres, slow down..." We walked out to where there was a lighthouse (Nugget Point maybe?) over looking some really dramatic rocky coast, home to seals.
We then headed up to Dunedin where we went for a roast lunch and drink in the London Lounge. Afterwards we went to the Otago

at the Speights Brewery :-) Settlers Museum (which my Mum loved) and then the Speights Brewery Tour (which I loved). In the Settlers Museum I spent most of the time watching a video about how they catch, kill, prepare and store mutton bird using traditional methods and materials (like storing them in bags made of kelp). In the Speights museum I spent most of the time looking forward to the tasting session at the end. Although it was pretty interesting tour and the guide was very funny.
From Dunedin we drove further north and stayed at a tiny motor park over looking a tiny marina.
