Travelling east now, we left Reefton for the thermal springs at Hanmer. Here are some photos of one or 2 things we saw on the way.

and it was very wobbly!!! over that same river. NZ specialises in these bridges.

the scenery becomes wilder. We noticed that the beautiful beech forests on the west side of the pass turn into softwood on the east side - not so pretty.

near the top of the pass. There was snow up there, but not on the road.

it certainly could be, with the stunted beeches draped in lichen. It smelled of clean air and mountains up there.

we walked a part of a long distance path, for a bit of exercise. It made me feel like going on to the end, but it was several days long.
