The East Cape

We drove around most of the East Cape all in one day. It took about five hours of actual driving. We stopped off quite a few times to look at the views which were wonderful. It's a very wild and rugged part of New Zealand with the beaches littered with driftwood - tons of the stuff. We had planned to camp at Hicks Bay, but although the beach was quite nice, there wasn't much there and as the weather was pretty windy we decided to press on. We camped a bit further round the Cape on a 'Freedom site' which was right next to the beach. Nobody came to collect the money for our permit for the night's camping, so it was free - bonus! It's always better when you don't have to pay for something. It was lovely to be somewhere so quiet after the hectic and busy site at Taupo.
