We arrived at Owera just before dark and checked into a Top 10 camp site, we needed to wash some clothes, shower and check email. While Pili was showering I cooked up a couple of sirloin steaks. North Island Robin

A typically fearless Robin, this is the cause of its demise.

North Island Saddleback

A once common bird but now extinct on the mainland, Tiritiri is its stronghold. Another victim of introduced predators.

Pili's new friend

Red crowned Parakeet

The population of this shy bird is crashing on the Northern mainland, elsewhere it is long gone!

Whitehead

A very shy and rare little bird

The magnificent Tui

North Island Saddleback

A very territorial bird, prefering the undergrowth.

Bellbird

This bird was a proud male calling for a mate, spring was in the air.

North Island Robin

This little Robin came to my feet, looking for insects I had disturbed whilst walking, typical Robin behaviour.

Leaving Tiritiri

A magical journey that I will someday repeat.

I am from Nova Scotia and am heading to Tirtiri in early Nov. I read your blog with great interest. Well done and well written. The Kokako pic was super. My son has challenged me to get a photo of this bird. I hope I will be as lucky as you!
