DAY 3 AFTERNOON
We had reserved a rental car for the afternoon. The plan was to drive around the island on the one road that circles the entire island. We asked the rental agent if there were any spots to stop for some quality local cuisine. She recommended Pineapple Island, a local food stop that is a favorite among the locals with a great view.
We were pretty lucky because the weather report said that it was supposed to rain every day of our trip. This afternoon was the first and only time we would encounter rain. Boy, it sure did rain hard.
Pineapple Island was about a 30 minute drive from the resort. When we arrived, we could see through the rain that it really had a gorgeous view but unfortunately, they were closed so we had to keep on driving. By this time, we were starving.
Luckily, every roadside eatery has bright red Coca Cola awnings so it was very easy to see places to stop and grab a bite. We pulled aside as soon as we saw red awnings. It didn't matter what they served or what the place looked like, we needed some
food.
We ended up at Daniel Pizzas which was just a patio with a counter built around an outdoor brick oven in front of Daniel's house. He had at least 10 different pizzas on the menu. We chose the Pizza Lorraine because it sounded the most unique and probably one that can't be duplicated back home. It consisted of a creamy sauce with french cheese and topped with olives, bacon, fresh cream, and onions. Wow! Daniel's pizza blew us away. Mrs. Chai was also able to practice her high school French because Daniel was a pastry chef from France and hardly spoke any English. Daniel was so proud when she told him that we loved the crust. She was even able to communicate and find out how the It was so good, we were very lucky to have found this place on accident.
We continued to circle the island and stopped at an outlook just past the airport that overlooks the Sofitel Resort. This was one of the many great viewpoints on this magical island.
DAY 3 EVENING
Since it was Chinese New Year, we decided to go to Le Mahogany, a French-Chinese restaurant for dinner.
This was another restaurant recommended by Blanc and was featured in the Albert Tours brochure along with Kaveka. Le Mahogany's ad in the brochure was terrible with lo-res images and poorly chosen shots of the interior (which was one of the reasons wechose to go to Kaveka the night before). Hands down, this was best dinner we had on the island. I got a chow mein which was good, but Mrs. Chai got the Filet Mignon topped with Foie Gras and a side of potatoes which was out of this world. This was the first time either of us had Foie Gras. It is really rich but was a great match with the steak and potatoes. The real surprise was the dessert. We ordered the profiterole, which was a creme puff pastry filled with Tahitian vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce drizzled over the top. We still talk about this dessert today. It was the best dish we had all trip. You can't beat the vanilla in Tahiti.
