The View Across The Bay After several days spent on Viti Levu it was time to explore some of the beaches Fiji had to offer. Boarding at Denerau port was a pleasure, very clear and understandable even we could work it out. Our first stop was Bounty Island, just 30 minutes ride away. From afar the island looked gorgeous and as we neared we were not disappointed.
The resort was lovely, lots of space and all the bures lead directly onto the beach. Soon as we were settled we legged it straight into the sea and explored the colourful sealife for as long as possible before getting too burned and having serious snorkelling mask impressions around our faces. After a tiring day swimming, lazing in the hammock and slobbing on the beach it was time to take full advantage of happy hour - finally some wine at long last! It was sunday so the resort dished up traditional beef roast dinner to chase down the cheap booze. We slept very well that night! In short a really great place and fully recommended as the ideal island stay.
After Bounty it was onto Waya Island, staying at Octopus Resort. The crossing from Lautoka was an
hour and a half across fairly choppy water in an eight man boat. It wasn't helped by the fact that we had scoffed icecreams immediately before getting on board. Our sea sickness subsided as we neared the shore. From the beach the staff were singing the chirpy 'bula' welcome song. Over the next few days we couldn't stopping humming the damn tune it was just so catchy and the fact that we heard it about four times a day as new people arrived didn't help.
The bures were made from woven palm tree leaves and sugarcane all constructed around a large timber frame. The open air bathrooms took a bit of getting used to but the rain water showers were lovely, all very rustic. Much to our amazement we didn't find that many insects penetrated our bure, there wasn't that many on the island anyway.
Outside of the bures there was a goregous golden bay. The sand was so fluffy it made walking twice as difficult as you just sank into it. We thought the snokelling on Bounty was good but Waya was amazing. Just a few meters out from the shore there were 30ft drops along with
20 Ft To The Beach
How's That For A Back Garden sharks, manta rays, turtles, and wonderfully coloured fish.
The sun was incredibly hot, Caz got burnt sitting underneath an umbrella wearing factor 45 and had to spend a few days out of the sun and the shade to recover!
Waya was an awesome island however the resort was rather expensive, other than the three meals a day everything was extra on top. It felt like we were on holiday rather than travelling. As it was getting to the end of our fiji travels and between the pair of us we only had $110 left so every night it was back to basics and we had to endure Fiji Bitter as our nightly beverage, it was only $3.
Sadly the end was nigh, time to pack our bags to move onto New Zealand. We have spent nearly a month in the South Pacific, it has been excellent and we have decided we are going to migrate to the Cook Islands, No is going to build insect proof beach huts and get paid in Paw paw's forever more....awesome! (only joking)
