Monkey Mia
A beautiful dolphin Well we didnt get to post on the blog last night because we free camped on a beach which was lovely. but no phone signal... Can't have everything!
So on Wednesday morning we saw the dolphins at Monkey Mia. Now this is a great experience, for sure, and no doubt on many folk's bucket list. So I would recommend you go to Monkey Mia if you can, but dont fret if you can't make it. You will enjoy it no doubt, but its not the most amazing thing we've seen on this trip.
The Parks & wildlife WA do a fabulous job, balancing the needs of the dolphin and the visitor. Apparently it hasn't always been that way and the dolphin families were exploited to the point where quite a number of the calves didnt make it into adult life. They didnt learn how to forage for food and survive in the wild. Now they only feed them a very small snack and the dolphins still have to search for the majority of their food. These dolphins have been coming into Monkey Mia since 1960 and all current dolphins are descendants of the original 3 mothers that first came.

They come in very close Its really well done and we got to see them quite close up, and learnt a lot about their lives. Photos weren't brilliant because its a bit of luck if they get close enough. We didnt get picked to feed them, but its only 6 out of the 100 or so people watching that get chosen, so no surprise.
We headed off pretty well after that. Monkey Mia is on the top right side of Shark Bay and on the left is the little town of Denham. Its a super nice little town and the water is the bluest of blue. You can do all kinds of water sports and fishing. And they desalinate their own water! We had very little tank water left because Monkey Mia only had very salty bore water. But at Denham you can fill your tank with beautiful crystal clear desalinated water, You have to pay but for the price of a dodgy cup of WA coffee ($5) we filled the tank with 100 litres of lovely water. A fabulous opportunity for travellers and should be everywhere!
The Shark Bay area is absolutely gorgeous. You have the bluest of blue water on both

The ranger explains all the family lines and Dolphin behaviour sides of the land. Its heritage listed and for good reason. spectacular. But there was one down side. Flies! We stopped at Hamelin Pools to see the geological formation called stromolites. But the flies were terrible! We had a quick look and hurried back into the Bago. Not sure why they are so bad in this area, but they are!
We free camped last night at a place called Grenough. The sand dunes along the this way are amazing! We found this free camp in amongst the sand dunes overlooking a beach called flat rocks. It was fantastic overlooking the surf and hearing the waves crashing overnight. You cant get a location like that if you paid at a caravan park! There were a few people around but pretty peaceful!
Today we had a leisurely start to the day and headed further down the Coral Coast. We headed onto the Indian Ocean drive, through Dongara, Port Denison, Leeman, Julien Bay, to name a few. All lovely! Its definitely getting cooler now 😞 Feels like we are going home, albeit a few k's to go yet..
We saw heaps of sand dunes, but one thing, the terrain changed

Think this may be Nicki, the mother of Fin to look very much like home! Farm land, green grass and blue water coast line! Very lovely!
We finished the day with a visit to the Pinnacles. This as an incredible place! Apparently they are limestone formations that have been covered then uncovered over thousands of years. Pretty sure there's still debate as to how they may have formed. None the less they look spectacular. The sand they stand in is the most amazing bright yellow, never seen that colour before! Its been described as a 'lost city' and that's really how it looks. Apparently Billy Connolly visited here and danced around naked! We decided not to follow suit!
So tonight we are by the sea again in a place called Lancelin. Pretty dodgy caravan park but it'll do. Right on the surf beach so the sound is lovely. We will probably get to Perth tomorrow and apparently the weathers getting a little worse. So missing the warmth allready. Better get used to it....
Stay warm people I'll be trying to do that myself!
