G'day everyone,

Cant believe we have been in Perth for over 1 week already. We have been really busy trying to organise accomodation, banks and etc (oh and enjoying the very hot weather 😉.

After finally arriving in OZ and getting out the airport at 2am, we got a taxi straight to the hostel we had previously booked. We were both looking forward to getting some sleep. However, we arrived to find the front gates locked and no sign of life in the hostel... after ringing the intercom for 10 minutes and getting no reply we found a phonebox down the street and rang the hostel...again no reply. We continued to contact the hostel, Paul pressing the intercom and me in the phonebox but continued to get no reply. We were beginning to think our first night in Perth would be on the streets (with all the creepie crawlies, eeek!). After at least an hour of trying, we ccaught a glimpse of someone moving in the hostel, we both shouted until he finally came to our rescue and let us in. To our disappointment this was not a member of staff who could check us in but a drunk
irishman who had no idea where any staff were. We eventually got checked in and got shown to our room at around 4am. The room i can only describe as a prison cell, but it was a bed so we didnt really care.

We spent our first few days familiarising ourselves with Perth city and the surrounding suburbs. There is alot of construction and renovation work taking place all over the city, apparently it has expanded a lot in recent years. Although to us all the buildings seemed tiny compared to Singapore and it didnt take us long to get to know our way around.

We checked into our next hostel, which was just a short walk into town. We then spent some more time exploring the city, we spent a day in Kings Park, which has stunning views looking onto the city. To get to Kings Park the route we took had an almost verticle climb that seemed to last forever...we later found out there is a lesiurely flat walk we could have taken at the other side of the park, we did wonder why there didnt seem to be anybody around on the way up, but we now know for next time.

We then checked into our next hostel which was right on the indian ocean. The local beach is called Scarborough beach and is literally a 1 minute walk away. You can watch the sunset on this beach, which we have done a couple of times, the views are lovely. The waves on the beach are huge, Paul cant wait for his first surf lesson and has spent alot of time enjoying the waves. I have been too busy on snake watch out on the beach (there is a warning sign at the entrance of the beach!!!!!).

Despite all the deadly animals here in Oz our scariest encounter with an animal so far has been with a....seagull, which decided to attack Paul the other day, i have never seen him run so fast.

At the moment we are job hunting, we are staying in hostels for another week then we move to an apartment near Kings Park which we are renting until the end of Jan.

We have learnt so much already on this trip but most importantly.... drunk irishmen can be helpful and NEVER mess with a seagull!

We shall update you all again soon,

Vicky & Paul

Hello Bruce and Sheila! Sounds like you are having a bonza time. Im really laughing when reading this because Vicky, you are sooooo like Louise!! If you were both on snake watch, God help us!! Good luck with the job search. Do they cull pigeons over here like they do here? That could be a job for Paul! Take care and keep updating your blog! xx
