oh the flies
making lunch in the trunk of the car in the outback... A bit of catching up:
Its been just about 4 months since i left Vancouver. It is hard to believe, this trip is proving to me that time passes when your having a good time....
I have been working at the Bar downtown for the past 8 weeks. Every weekend my life consists of working until 4-5am in the morning, sleeping until noon and then going back to work. Its exhausting but still a lot of fun, and i'm still just so thankful i found a decent job. I am just finishing up my last weekend there as (can you believe it?) its already time to move on from Australia!!
Just before my birthday in the beginning of March, Mum and Kevin got to Australia. They arrived in Sydney and did a completely insane, whirlwind tour of the east coast in 5 days before heading over to Perth. They decided to do 2 shorter road trips in Western Australia as it would allow me to work the weekend in the middle, and have some time in the city.... We started heading North first.
The first days drive took us first to Cervantes. About 3 hours north
of Perth lies the Pinnacles, a spectacle not to be missed if you are in the area. It is a massive area completely covered in limestone pillars that stick out of the desert sand like giant head stones. It has almost an eerie graveyard feel. With the temperature hovering around 38 degrees we spent an hour walking around in awe of the beauty and of the vast difference this site had from its surrounding area, which contained no such formations...
Back in the car for another 5 hours we arrived for our first night in Kalbarri. At the mouth of an elaborate river system this town is a popular summer destination for fishermen and families. Had our first of many pub meals to come, with a local beer of course and headed to bed...
The next morning we took off for Shark Bay, our final destination. Shark Bay is an International Heritage site and it's wildlife and ecosystems are heavily protected. At the mouth of the first bay lies perhaps the most incredible beach entirely made up of small white shells (if you know my mum, you would know that this is pretty much what heaven would look like
for her)... the beach went on for miles and miles. in the distance you could see bulldozers working mining the shells that would eventually be mixed in with chicken feed so that in fact their shells are egg shells are stronger.... reading about this on a tourist info sign mum and i saw no reason why we should feel bad to take a couple for ourselves.....
On to Denham, where we were staying the next 2 nights. it was very windy and the kite boarders were out in full force. (for those of you who dont know, kiteboarding is an extreme sport where your feet are strapped into a board similar to a snowboard and then attached to a harness around your waist is a massive kite that pulls you around from a fifty feet in the air. From our deck off the cabin, we had a couple beers, enjoyed a beautiful sunset and went to bed early preparing for an early morning.
We were up and in the car before the sun came up the next morning, all for the promise of seeing the infamous dolphins at Monkey Mia (pronounced monkey mya). Mum and i were the
first in the water, and not long after we saw them. swimming into shore from who knows where, were about 8 dolphins whom come in every morning to be fed by the park Rangers. It all started a long time ago, when the first woman that lived there started to feed them, and they have been back almost every day since...
we explored the area the rest of the day, ending it baking on the beach.
the next day we headed to Geraldton for a relaxing, uneventful night in the small town and drove the rest of the way back to Perth the following day... I got home just in time to head to work for the next couple nights, Sunday morning after no more then an hour of sleep mum, Kevin and i headed to Margaret River.
Its only a short drive from Perth, about 3 hours. Popular for its surf and wineries, Id love to say we tried both, but we were only spectators at the beach. the waves were massive, and some of the skill: very impressive.
Kevin was our "skipper" for the wine tasting, and i felt bad that he wasn't able
to experience all the different wines. Mum proved herself in the fact that she is not very good at drinking before 3pm. I wish i could say the same, but i was so happy to just keep tasting.
after 2 amazing days in Margaret River we headed back to Perth, the rental car with some 3000+ kms extra , and Mum and Kevin left the next day...it was so sad to say good-bye...
my last couple weeks here will consist of sorting out my visa's for Asia, and some other last minute things...
I guess i have not really let you all in on my plan, so i will out line it briefly without giving to much away, wouldn't want these blogs to be any more boring!!!
From Perth (on the 30th of April) i will be heading to Bali, Indonesia for 2 weeks, Then on to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam until late July, India to do some volunteer work and of course Yoga, Europe to see as much as possible in 2 months, England to visit the family and home by Christmas....
but we know how plans change so easily when you
are traveling...
